As different denominations have different lengths, some netizens have taken on smaller denominations to show that their wrists are especially slender. A red one hundred yuan bill is 15.5 centimetres long, a blue ten yuan bill is 14, and a green one yuan bill is just 13 centimeters long.

The “money wrist” is just the latest in a long line of online memes that have become popular among Chinese women over the last year as a means of fulfilling an arbitrary standard of beauty.

Tallying up all of the recent Internet beauty memes leaves Chinese women with a remarkably unattainable standard of physical traits:

• flexibility and grace (folding hands behind back meme)
• long necks (roll of coins on collarbone meme)
• large breasts (groping own breasts meme; underboob pencil meme)
• slender waist (A4 paper waist meme; belly button meme)
• tiny, compact knees (iPhone 6 leg meme)

Interestingly, the money wrist test flies in the face of the commonly held belief among Chinese that paper money is filthy. Paper currency is considered to be so dirty in China that it some physicians have blamed it on the spread of genital warts.

Last year, a gynecologist at Wenzhou City People’s Hospital concluded that two bank tellers contracted genital warts after handling money at work without washing their hands before going to the bathroom. And these are not isolated cases. In 2005, doctors informed a cashier named Li Jia, who had never had a boyfriend, that she contracted gonorrhea from handling paper money at not washing her hands before using the toilet. While in 2004, a 19 year-old cashier named Guo Jihong in Changchun contracted genital warts despite claims that she also had never had a boyfriend.

Chinese authorities routinely remind the public to wash their hands after touching paper currency.

Like other Chinese memes compelling women to meet some arbitrary standard of beauty, the iPhone leg test is simple: if you can cover your knees using an iPhone 6 or 6s phone, you’ve passed.

While backlash to the “A4 paper waist” mostly came from Western Internet users who covered up their midriffs with university diplomas in protest, the “iPhone leg” has already provoked a negative response from Chinese netizens who are quickly growing tired of a long list of memes capitalizing on the popular selfie craze in China.

The past year has seen a number of these “beauty standard tests” that typically involve women posting selfies online. So far, we’ve seen women reach behind their backs to touch their own belly buttons as well as fold their hands behind their backs to show their flexibility; put a roll of coins on their collar bone to show their thinness; groping their own breasts from behind their backs; and the underboob pencil trick to show that their breasts are large enough. And, of course, we’ve seen the A4 paper waist meme earlier this month.

On December 28, over 1,000 graduates walked down runways dressed in swimwear and heels or in flight attendant uniforms in the hopes of being picked to pour coffee at 30,000 feet.

Held in Qingdao, the 11th annual “Oriental Beauty” attracted hopefuls from Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Jilin hoping to “establish themselves” at the industry show. The potential flight attendants were judged on their manner, slimness, pleasantness of voice, and having no visible scars.

Qingdao Airlines previously confirmed that it requires its flight attendants to maintain strict weight requirements of as little as 50 kilograms (110 lbs) partly due to reasons of “flight safety.” At the same time, male pilots face no such requirements.

Naturally, not everyone approves of the flight attendants’ fashion show. The Independent called the promotional event “a bizarre ritual” and the industry that supports these practices as “the airline that feminism forgot.”

In less than a decade, it has drastically evolved. In fact, an unidentified bar in Shenyang, Liaoning distanced itself from the shopping and romance by providing a writhing dancer in a bikini for its patrons to freely pour beer upon.

Maybe it’s slowly becoming China’s version of the popular US “Spring Break”?

“Dancing in a wading pool covered in beer” isn’t normally a popular activity in China, a country known for its conservative attitudes towards sexuality, and was not well-received by netizens online. One person said, “Vulgarity without limits.” Another person wrote, “Despicable. This isn’t a promotion for a (bar), this is flat-out prostitution! People nowadays really have no restraints holding them back.”

Yet another person took the opportunity to point out: “I can see a police car outside the window (in the last picture).”

With this latest salvo shot in the War on Singles’ Day, who can say if November 11 will become the future date for wet T-shirt competitions and beer bong consumption in what will potentially be China’s own Spring Break festival.

Based on the statistics of 162 defendants in 151 rape cases spread out over three years, judge Guo Zhao in Haidian explained that victims who engage in “exaggerated and excessive” behavior risk becoming the target of rapists. Judge Guo said rape defendants have confessed that they often decide to commit rape upon the sight of a young, pretty woman wearing revealing clothes.

There are other vices that can get women in trouble. Furthermore, another reason women get raped in China is because they are too “bold” and are willing to go to dangerous places that ordinary women have the sense to stay away from.

The Haidian court also explains victims usually know their rapists. In 45 percent of the rape cases analysed, the relationship between the victim and the rapist is either as co-worker or friends.

In short, the court study seems to be saying rapists are men who can’t control themselves and can’t be blamed if they are enticed by women with “vices”.

The study says the main reason a man commits rape is because he is young with exuberant, but repressed, physical needs. They usually work by themselves in a foreign city and are separated from their wives (if they are married), and rape because their physiological needs can not be met.

Mostly aged 18 to 30, the majority of rapists have no stable income, are poorly educated, and have a low awareness of the law. As the study says, their anti-social tendencies are manifested by going online to indulge in perverted fantasies that eventually lead to rape.

In another study conducted by the United Nations, the Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the Pacific found that a fifth of male respondents in China admitted they have forced a woman to have sex with them, 86 percent of which cited sexual entitlement as their motive while 53 percent said they raped out of boredom. A boxing-themed bar in Taiyuan, Shanxi celebrated its opening last week by inviting models dressed in bikinis to put on boxing gloves and hit each other.

According to the owner, the boxing ring prominently featured in the bar is a way to give anyone a chance to step into the ring.

““The boxing bar provides people with a way to deal with stress in a fast-paced lifestyle.”The boxing bar provides people with a way to deal with stress in a fast-paced lifestyle,” said the boss, who sees its use as being therapeutic for the community at large:

Through the creation of this grassroots boxing ring, we can allow white collar workers an opportunity to vent and release their bad moods and pressure.

It appears the boxing bar may have been around since July, and has since changed its promotional strategy.

Earlier reports say a boxing-themed bar opened in Taiyuan, Shanxi on July 10 this year. Although both bars in the old and new media reports are unidentified, they similarly feature a boxing ring with a blue mat with corners marked out with red and blue stripes, while patrons are seen sitting at ringside on a green half-moon lounge seat.

For the July 10 opening day, male combat sport participants from outside China were invited to the Taiyuan boxing bar to fight in competitive matches, as seen in the following gallery:

If these two “opening days” belong to the same boxing-themed bar in Taiyuan, the bikini boxing that occurred this week could signify a radical change in the bar’s promotional strategy.

But whichever the case, this Taiyuan bar appears to have no objectives about allowing its fighters to partake in alcoholic beverages. In the photo below, a bikini-attired fighter from the bar’s September 7th opening day is seen drinking a carbonated drink from a champagne flute while still wearing a boxing glove (below):

But if this Taiyuan bar doesn’t meet your tastes, there are always others that be more suited to you. For example, another Taiyuan restaurant features a row of scantily-dressed mannequins behind a row of urinals in the men’s washroom.

Earlier Chinese reports showed a color-coded chart (below) purportedly used by the airline that indicates the ideal weight of a flight attendant as determined by her height. Qingdao Airlines flight attendants that allow their weight to fall into a “yellow zone” were supposedly grounded from flying, while those with a weight that fall into in a “red zone” are immediately terminated.

The Qingdao Airlines spokesperson denied these allegations, and explained their chart is not a tool for managing its current employees, but a guide for hiring new recruits:

The chart seen in the article refers to a standard that we use when hiring flight attendants. Every airline has their own recruiting requirements. Our company’s requirements are slightly high.

Qingdao Airlines’ own website under “Flight Attendant Recruiting” shows all new applicants must be under 30 years old and fall within this formula for weight: [height(cm)-110]=weight(kg)(1±10%). This means that a 165 centimeter-tall (5’5″) applicant must weigh no more than 50 kilograms (110 lbs), while a 172 centimeter-tall (5’8) applicant can be no more than 68 kilograms (150 lbs).

The Qingdao Airlines spokesperson said the vast majority of its flight attendants comply with its weight requirements. The spokesperson did not say what punitive actions would be taken if its company’s weight regulations were violated.

The spokesperson further clarified that flight attendants must adhere to their rigorous weight requirements as a way to maintain “flight safety”:

We consider that if the weight of a flight attendant is excessive, her ability to react during an emergency situation will be inadequate, which is why we hope they will be able to maintain their figures.

China’s National Civil Aviation Bureau also thinks the weight of a flight attendant is relevant to the safe operation of an airliner. A representative for the bureau confirmed there is a correlation between the weight of a flight crew member and aircraft safety because when calculating the load of an airplane, the total weight of a flight crew must be taken into account. Therefore, the representative said, the weight of a flight attendant can not be excessive.

No standards pertaining to the weight of pilots was mentioned in the report.

An unnamed veteran manager of the Chinese airline industry calls the Qingdao weight regulations “a human rights violation”. The manager says that flight attendants are treated unfairly given that “the calculation of the load of a plane usually lists every adult on board as being 72 kilograms without having to specifically weigh them.”

Other developments in the Chinese airline industry this week reveal more questionable treatment of flight attendants.

Shanghai Airlines also cited “flight safety” when it was criticized this week after it revealed company policy allowed management to hold final approval when its employees want to get married. Flight attendants, security guards and pilots working for Shanghai Airlines must all provide information about their spouses-to-be to the company.

In an online statement, Shanghai Airlines said it wanted to find out to whom their workers were getting married before it was too late. “It is common in the civil aviation industry for companies to investigate their employees’ families to determine if they have a criminal record,” the statement read. “It is mainly to ensure flight safety.”

Although China’s marriage law states no one has the right to interfere in the marriages of other people, Shanghai Airlines says their policy has been in place for a long time.

Hong Kong is a fantastic international tourist destination, but if your main takeaway is the city is an (ahem) “pussy heaven”, and you go on to write a lengthy (and popular) book about it, expect to be skewered by the locals.

The book Get Laid in Hong Kong: A Travel and Sex Guide for the Western Asian Male was released in the spring and has come under heavy criticism by Hong Kong women’s rights and labor groups.

Luk Jit-ling, head of the New Women’s Association of Hong Kong, says the book advocates discrimination by defining overseas Chinese men as superior, and makes Hong Kong women more at-risk for predatory behavior. Ms Sringatin, chair of the Indonesian foreign workers trade union, says the book’s depiction of domestic helpers is insulting, and said it exploits women.

The book is the target of a Change.org petition that is demanding Amazon remove it from its store, where it rose to #1 in the Asian Travel section. As of writing this post, the book is no longer available for sale.

Get Laid in Hong Kong: A Travel and Sex Guide for the Western Asian Male is written by a overseas Chinese blogger named TheLoneWolfTraveler (link NSFW). The inspiration for the book comes from a “sex crazed vacation with the local Hong Kong girls” that he had three years ago, for which he now wants to impart his wisdom to help overseas Chinese men have a similar experience.

With a blurb saying the book is “Guaranteed to get you laid”, Lone Wolf maintains that Hong Kong women are attracted to ethnic Chinese men that have been raised abroad because they represent “wealth and status” and have “higher status” than local Chinese men.

Contents of the book deal with the author’s experiences of “picking up girls in the club district of Lan Kwai Fong, gaming girls that work the night shifts in 7 -11 mini mart and gaming the domestic helper women during their day off.”

The book tells men looking for sex that they should hide their intentions in order to achieve their goals. For example, if they ask you “Why are you in Hong Kong?” think carefully about your answer.

The guide also offers tips for white men who have come to Hong Kong looking to score with the local ladies, specifically devoting a chapter to this subject.

In his latest blog post last month, TheLoneWolfTraveler notes that his book has hit the Hong Kong mainstream news media, but doesn’t care for the backlash. He writes, “Hong Kong is not too happy about my book but men still need to get laid.”

The draft legislation, titled “Special Work and Labor Conditions for Women of the Province of Anhui”, would also regulate other women’s issues, such as breastfeeding and maternity leave. The legislation proposes the following:

• women can take up to two days off work each month as long as they provide a doctor’s note;
• pregnant women cannot be scheduled to work night shifts or over-time;
• breastfeeding mothers can take one hour off work each day to feed a child under the age of one year;
• companies must also allocate each woman a stipend of RMB 30 each month for “hygienic/sanitary products” in the workplace; and,
• women suffering menopause can apply, with medical evidence, for a reduced workload.

In anticipation that some employers may discriminate against hiring women to avoid the proposed legislation, lawmakers are prohibiting employers from refusing to hire women. Companies would also be prohibited from interfering with women marrying and having babies, or reducing salaries and benefits of its female employees due to marriage, pregnancy, maternity leave, and/or breastfeeding.

Colloquially referred to as “pink holidays”, the issue of providing time off work for menstruating women was first proposed by MBA students at Sun Yat-sen University. The color pink has also been associated with “pink parking spaces“, extra-wide parking spaces at urban shopping malls that were exclusively provided to women drivers.

Enter Shanghai’s new pink parking spaces, recently created at an underground facility at a commercial building in Shanghai. The building painted four extra-large, pink parking spots reserved for women only. The goal? Give them a bit more room to park properly.

The pink parking spaces are three by six meters in size, and are conveniently located next to the elevator. An emergency two-way radio is installed next to the pink parking spots, too, just in case they run into trouble.

The management for the garage said the pink parking spaces are absolutely not discriminatory, adding they exist simply to make things more convenient for the Estrogen-fueled sex. In fact, the management said the idea for pink parking spaces came from abroad, although they didn’t say where.

Chinese people weren’t too thrilled with the idea, at least based on comments posted online. “This sums up the state of gender equality. So disappointing,” one person wrote, while another asked, “Is this some kind of indication of the way women drive cars?”

One netizen went so far as to ask what other kind of special treatment will be expected for Chinese women. “In the future will they have exclusive women-only sidewalks? Women-only waiting areas? Women-only traffic lights? Traffic laws for women only?”

Pink parking spaces began appearing at malls throughout China last year.

Last June, Dalian became one of China’s first cities to offer pink parking spaces exclusively for women drivers, a move that attracted mixed reactions. The exclusive women-only parking spots then appeared in Chongqing at another shopping mall last October.

That’s when netizens noticed that the pink parking spaces weren’t just for any old women, but rich women. Photographs showed the pink spots were mostly used by women driving high-end luxury cars.
