When confronted a throng of pushy Chinese tourists, there isn’t much a single person can do. That is, unless you’re a celebrity who can shame the rude behavior by creating a viral video.
That’s exactly what Thai celebrity Duangjai Phichitamphon did. While waiting in line at Jeju Airport in South Korea at a tax refund booth, Phichitamphon was overrun by a mass of Chinese tourists. What was an orderly queue quickly became a disorderly free-for-all in which Phichitamphon said she was pushed, had her feet stepped on, and had her hair pulled.
This was simply too much for Phichitamphon, and so she fought back by making an epic two minute video rant. In it, she complains about the lack of manners of Chinese tourists.
The original video has already racked up over 725,000 views in four days on Youtube, while headlines in national Thai newspapers about the incident include “Chinese Tourists Have Again Lost Face for China”.
Phichitamphon makes several observations in the video, in which she becomes visibly agitated:
A queue means a line, right? That’s why we call it a queue.
[The Chinese] don’t know what it means to have manners, to form line, or to have courtesy! None!
I can’t even say “San Queue” in Thai (Thai for “cutting line”) or they would think we said thank you.
Everywhere [the Chinese] go in the world make everyone feel disgusted by their manners. Didn’t their parents teach them manners?
Examples of poor behavior exhibited in Thailand have been a hot topic lately. Thailand’s famous White Temple banned Chinese tourists after they left its bathrooms in poor condition. Then a woman identified as a Chinese tourist was caught drying her underwear in a public waiting hall at a Thai airport. Finally, Thailand has produced a handbook made specifically to teach Chinese tourists manners.
