It’s tough being a young man who doesn’t smoke in China, a habit which kills up to a third of all Chinese men. One Nanning University student in Guanxi who decided he wasn’t going to be another statistic, has constructed a rather ingenious contraption to avoid the perils of second-hand smoke.

Stuck with three roommates who smoke, the student clipped a fan to a window above the entrance of his dorm room. He then fixed a long plastic bag over the window helping the fan to draw air from outside into the bag. He then connected the other end of the plastic bag to a box the student wears over his head, protecting him from the second-hand smoke.

The DIY setup certainly wasn’t expensive. Even the box appears to be re-purposed, originally serving as the box for the fan.

second hand smoke smoking invention

Even if our inventor prefers the confines of his cardboard haven over confronting his roommates, the municipal governments of Beijing and Guangzhou have gone ahead and implemented city-wide indoor smoking bans. Hopefully a proposed nation-wide smoking ban will soon take effect, and this poor soul won’t have to hang-out in his dorm with a box over his head.

A video has surfaced showing a group of girls armed with pipes and long-bladed knives attacking each other in broad daylight in a village in Guangxi.

Local police confirmed the brawl took place Sunday afternoon in the township of Silian, near Ma’an Mountain.

As seen in a five minute-long video, a group of nearly 20 girls, all thought to be minors, chased each other through the streets of the village as bystanders watched. According to reports, the armed brawl began with ten girls bullying a single girl before ten more girls come to her aid.

Local police believe the incident stemmed from an online disagreement. One of the girls fighting in the video can be heard asking the bullied girl, “Are you still my friend?”.

Incredibly, no one was seriously injured. Among the weapons used in the fight was a taser, which can be heard at the 2:27 mark of the video.

Police say that no arrests or charges have been laid but that they are still investigating.

Liu Fan, whose cousin received a head injury in the fight, told reporters that the risk of violence between Chinese youth is higher than ever before. “Kids nowadays need constant supervision,” said Fan. “If they’re going to fight, they’ll fight with knives.”

Chinese netizens were highly critical of the girls’ behavior. One person wrote, “The school should teach these girls better or they’ll face a future of regrets,” while another criticized them for their unladylike behavior, saying, “These people will all become mothers one day.”

Another person believes the incident is a sign of the times: “I remember back when I was going to school, it would be the boys that fought like this, while the girls would stand aside. Nowadays, it’s the opposite with girls fighting while boys stand watching idly by.”

Not everyone was critical of the girls. One person explained that these girls are left behind children, and that the incident is indicative of the harsh life they lead: “In truth, these girls have a terrible life as do all left behind children, and seeing them makes me feel sad. When I was young, I too had been mercilessly bullied.”

The phrase “If you build it, they will come” from the 1989 film, Field of Dreams, is commonly used to describe the birth and development of something new. Applying the phrase to a newly-constructed school in Guanxi, however, is a little more complicated. While developers did indeed build the Tiantao Experimental Middle School in the City of Nanning, city officials proceeded to demolish it before even a single class could be held.

new school demolished construction guangxi

The truly infuriating part for local residents was that neither the school officials nor the developer offered any explanation as to why the school was being demolished until yesterday. According to a school official, “hidden geological dangers that are difficult to explain, necessitate the school having to be completely rebuilt from scratch.” There has been no further clarification as to what precisely the hidden geological dangers are, however as the demolition of the school began on Monday, it doesn’t make much of a difference at this point.

Prior to the “explanation”, residents took to Weibo to speculate as to why the school was being destroyed. Several netizens questioned if the city failed to meet its GDP quota, arguing the school was specifically built to be torn down. Others suspected the demolition was the result of shoddy construction, or that there were simply not enough students to attend the school.

Alarming video footage from Nanning, Guangxi shows an elderly woman falling inside a sewer after stepping on a manhole cover that crumbled under her weight.

nanning manhole collapse

It’s not clear how deep the sewer was, but Chinese regulations stipulate that a “safety net” must be present below the manhole to prevent injuries in emergencies like these.

Manhole accidents are common in China, often because pedestrians step into open ones. Stolen manhole covers are sold for scrap metal that can match a day’s wages for a labourer. According to Xinhua, about 240,000 manhole and street-drain covers were stolen in Beijing in 2004. Manhole accidents have also been associated with the buildup of methane gas, leading to explosions.

Even now that some manhole covers are equipped with anti-theft devices like GPS trackers, many manhole covers in China are now made out of plastic instead of steel.

Here’s the video:

backpack laowaiMiss Tan had a very simple dream: she wanted to leave China. When she married Mark, a UK national, she thought her dreams had come true. However, Mark had other plans.

Two years after getting married to Mark, Tan was forced to get a divorce after she spent the majority of their marriage by herself.

Tan met Mark online in July 2011, and the two met a year later when Mark came to visit her in China in November 2012. It must have been a good visit, because the two got married that same month.. Neither could communicate with each other well, and Tan later said she carelessly married Mark in order to leave China.

However, Mark left in December 2012 because his visa expired, leaving Tan, who lived in Liuzhou, on her own. Then the pair began fighting and holding grudges against each other, and grew distant

When seeking a divorce from Mark in June of this year, Tan ran into problems because her husband was not present. To process the divorce, the courts required Mark’s visa and marriage certificate.

However, Mark finally showed up and agreed to the divorce.

Tan was never able to fulfill her dream of leaving China. It is not known if she is now looking for foreigners for other opportunities.

Guilin’s famous Sun and Moon Pagodas caught on fire at 7:57 this morning, on the same day a national holiday kicks off that would have seen thousands of visitors. A tall plume of black smoke was seen billowing from one of its structures.

The Sun and Moon Pagodas were originally based on Tang dynasty designs, but were rebuilt in 2001. As a tourist attraction, it is famous for its night time display of gold and silver lights.

Firefighters have already extinguished the fire, and damage to the tourist attraction is still being assessed. A preliminary investigation says the fire was caused by an electrical problem involving the artificial lanterns used at night.

Several photographs show the tourist attraction on fire:

To celebrate the opening of a new building in Guangxi Province, a giveaway of free, live chickens was held for local residents, reports MSN. Chickens aren’t usually given away for free, so word spread far and wide. So far that around a thousand residents converged on the building in Nanning yesterday morning (September 21).

There were markings for people to line-up, but those were quickly ignored. It devolved into a lawless free-for-all. The mob’s insatiable demand for free, live chickens resulted in the toppling of a tent, causing many people to fall to the ground. After 15 minutes, the only thing left were some scattered feathers and shoes lost in the scuffle.

No one was injured from the melee.

dog eating yulin meat guangxiAs the controversial Summer Solstice Lychee Dog Eating Festival in Yulin approaches, local health care professionals have reportedly been ordered to refrain from chowing down on man’s best friend.

The Southern Metropolis Daily reports two doctors from the Yulin maternal and child care service center have stated that doctors, nurses, and their families have been ordered to refrain from eating dog meat in public.

However, a deputy director of the center disputed the claims, saying there has been no such order.

The report did not say why health care professionals have been singled out, nor did it say if other professional fields are also included in the order.

The Yulin dog eating festival is an annual event that has attracted criticism and protests from animal activists. An estimated 10,000 dogs were consumed at the festival last year, and organizers are gearing up for this year’s festival on June 21.

Clashes between protestors and Yulin residents have already begun despite local efforts to minimize the controversy by removing the character “dog” from all Yulin restaurant signs and menus.

According to a Xinmin Community report, 10 unidentified people from Guangdong, Nanning and Guangxi clashed with local residents in Yulin over the treatment and capture of dogs used for their meat on June 10 at around 8am.

The activists first got into an altercation with a merchant, and tried to throw food at the trapped dogs. When that didn’t work, the activists alerted police.

However, the activists weren’t happy with police and municipal food inspection workers so they kicked down the merchant’s door despite him showing his certificate of quarantine.

The animal activists have all been detained by authorities.dog meat restaurant animal activists rights

Yulin has been trying to prevent these kinds of disputes.

To keep from drawing attention from activists, restauranteurs were told to remove the word “dog” from signs and menus, refrain from slaughtering dogs in a public place (such as in the middle of the street), and not to hang cooked dog meat in front of the store.

Here are some censored signs that don’t have the character “dog” in them:

The censored words are in the middle of this sign: “House specialties: x, mutton

The sign reads in part: “… crispy skin x meat“.

Most city restaurants have complied with the guidelines, but some residents who are proud of their dog-eating ways are upset.

Yulin resident Mr Liu said the “dog” character in signs should not be hidden:

We haven’t done anything illegal, why must we eat dog meat on the sly?

Soon no Yulin resident will have to be shy about their taste for canines. On June 21, the Summer Soltice Lichee Dog Meat Festival will take place in Yulin. Last year, it was estimated nearly 10,000 dogs were consumed during the festival.

Animal activists have proven to be influential in shutting down similar events. In 2011, the City of Jinhua in Zhejiang Province cancelled its dog eating festival due to public pressure.
