Last Friday’s terror attacks in Paris that have claimed 129 victims is a terrible tragedy, but it appears that something is holding back Chinese from freely expressly their sympathy and support — nationalism.

While this sentiment runs throughout China, the media isn’t shy about leading popular opinion. Chinese state-run newspaper the People’s Daily does not want the Paris terror attacks to overshadow a deadly landslide that coincidentally happened at the same time, and it does so by urging its readers to choose one over the other.

lishui landslide

Twenty-five people died when a landslide struck the village of Lidong near the city of Lishui, Zhejiang at 10:50 on Friday night. Only one person has been rescued from the landslide so far, while another 12 victims remain unaccounted for. Twenty-seven Lidong homes below an adjacent mountain were buried, with another 21 flooded.

Landslides are a common occurrence in China that have derailed trains, blocked train tracks, capsized boats in the Yangtze River, and have caused numerous fatalities during south China’s annual rainy season. It’s a problem that keeps happening in China, but with the Paris terror attacks attracting world-wide attention on Friday night, the Lishui incident is at risk of being ignored in the daily news cycle.

That’s where the People’s Daily intervened by sharing a Weibo micro-blogging post at around 8pm on Saturday. The post compares the two tragic incidents:

lishui landslide

People’s Daily Weibo Opinion: Cry for Paris, but don’t forget to cry for Lishui as well.
The Paris terror attack has shocked the world. Terrorists are the enemy of the entire word which is united in its humanity to defeat it. Cry for Paris, but don’t forget to cry for Lishui as well. A landslide occurred in Lidong village, Yaxi County, Liandu District, Lishui, Zhejiang. The latest news reports there are nine dead from the disaster, with another 28 victims unaccounted for. Every life that is taken away in a disaster is valuable; please direct your concerns and prayers towards Lishui.

Even though many Chinese have shown sympathy towards the people of France, many of the top-voted responses said deaths from the Paris terror attacks are simply not as important as those from the Lishui landslide, two incidents that were otherwise separate and unrelated before the People’s Daily Online made the connection.

Here are what some Chinese people had to say in response to the People’s Daily Online Weibo post:

(highest rated comment)
洛水柳畔:
I don’t cry for Paris, I pray for that whore the Virgin Mary to curse them. I only pray for Lishui.

Fally章:
Pray for your own compatriots! France supports Tibet independence!

春晖大地:
Some people these days only know how to concern themselves with the outside world. They think that everything outside the border is great. If you think that it’s so great in other countries, then you should immigrate! If you’re going to be spouting off your opinions, then you should show some concern about your own country. China is not worse than other countries!

O福星高照O:
Cry for Paris? From where do I have such emotion? I am only sympathizing with them! I only cry for the tragic deaths of my compatriots!

king1however:
The perspective of the masses is directed by the media. Don’t forget this, because the people won’t forget this.

应西堤:
Even more importantly, don’t forget about Tianjin.

努力使自己微笑:
The running dogs of capitalism have gone to lick France.

pearl tower french flag color

Even though Chinese President Xi Jiping has made an official statement saying that China is devoted to fighting terrorism, and the Oriental Pearl Tower lit up its exterior in the colors of the French flag, the feeling that the Paris terror attacks were stealing attention away from China’s own domestic tragedy have been spreading online.

In a CCTV report about the Lishui landslide that made no mention whatsoever about the Paris terror attacks, netizens used the opportunity to compare the two incidents in much the way that the People’s Daily Online had done:

lishui landslide

鉴翔师:
I ask the municipal government of Shanghai to shine their lights for the victims of the Lishui landslide. I also ask the network of the addicted running lap dogs of the Virgin Mary to shout aloud ‘May heaven protect Zhejiang’. I also ask that the traitors belonging to the media outlet Caijing as well as others to pray for the victims of Lishui.

Lr19970808:
Hey, Oriental Pearl Tower, why do you pray for foreign countries, but not for China?

神的奥斯坦丁:
My compatriots (who died in the Lishui landslide), even though you didn’t die in a terror attack, you are still Chinese people. The Oriental Pearl Tower won’t shine its lights for you. When I return home I will light a candle for you…

pearl tower french flag color

Then there’s this comment:

paris terror attack

Don’t the lives of Chinese people matter?
On November 13, Paris suffered an unprecedented terror attack that led to the deaths of some 140 people. On television, French President Francois Hollande showed how moved he was by the attack by the shakiness of his voice. What is unacceptable is that the 2009 terror attack in Urumqi, in which 197 people died and 1700 people were hurt, was far more severe than in Paris. However, the French government showed no anger or “shaky voice” at this time, but instead interfered with China trying to implement the death penalty upon these terrorists.

It may seem like a minor miracle to get Chinese to actively care about the terror attacks in Paris, but there is one thing that may come to pass. Since the attacks occurred on Friday, there has been no contact with 27 year-old Chinese graduate student Liu Anyu, drawing fears that he may be one of the victims who succumbed in the attacks.

A video in which an expat riding the subway in Taipei, Taiwan was targeted in an ugly, racially-motivated verbal attack by a Chinese man has gone viral after being uploaded online.

Christopher Raymond Hall, who claims to have never met the abuser before, was described in the video as “ugly” and trash”. Hall’s girlfriend was called a “whore” for which “The whole of Taiwan despises you, you f***ing whore.”

The abuser accused Hall of being a failure who only came to Taiwan because he was unable to succeed at home. Upon trying to walk away, Hall and his girlfriend were followed by the man who continued to harass them. The onslaught continued for eight minutes until Hall and his girlfriend got off the train.

Hall reported the incident to local police on October 15, but seeing as there was no progress on the case, he uploaded a video of the incident to Youtube, where the video has already been seen nearly a half million times.

The video is completely in Chinese, but is subtitled in both Chinese and English. Hall intersperses his own reaction along side scenes from the incident, which he calls “racist” and “discriminatory”. Hall explains, in fluent Chinese, that he has lived in Taiwan for ten years and has local friends who are very supportive of him.

Hall later wrote on his Facebook page that a suspect has been caught by police.

If Taiwan pop singer Christine Fan is anything like the billion-plus mainland Chinese population, she was spending time off work with her family last Thursday morning. In fact, we know this for a fact because that’s when Fan posted photos of her baby twins to the Weibo microblogging platform.

As any of the 47.7 million subscribers to Christine Fan’s Weibo feed already know, Fan regularly posts pictures of her babies, just the same as many new parents. However, while you may express annoyance at the overabundance of your friends’ baby pictures in your Facebook feed, these baby pictures had crossed the line and were enraging tens of thousands of Chinese netizens because they were posted on the 70th anniversary to the end of World War II, known in China as the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.”

As China Daily summarized it, some people felt it was “inappropriate to show scenes from [your] personal life” on this anniversary, and “questioned why Fan was flaunting family life while turning a deaf ear to the nationwide excitement over the victory parade.”

Furor over Fan’s baby pictures continued until Friday evening when Fan made a post online that apologized for making so many people upset. This post, as well as the original Thursday morning post, would be later deleted.

But even with the offending posts removed, online discussion between the ideals of national pride versus personal life continued. In these politically-sensitive times, Chinese netizens found ways to satirize the way their public discourse must be shaped.

Writer Li Haipeng took to Weibo to post the following:

refrigerator comrade

Long live the motherland! Who can name me a brand of refrigerator that is wide, yet flat?

For such a short and understated post, netizens caught on to Li’s brand of humor, and continued his theme of using Revolutionary-speak to begin his phrases, no matter how mundane. Here’s an exchange Li has with another netizen:

Electric Rice Pot Super Man:
The Communist Party is the best! Haier model BCD-521WDPD is approximately about 65 centimeters wide at the door, and is basically the thinnest model.

Li Haipeng:
May the fate of our country remain prosperous. I require a model that is less than 60 centimeters wide. Is there an imported model like this?

Here are other satirical responses to Li’s post along the same vein:

Support domestic products, boycott Japanese products; let’s all watch the military parade together! (As for) the fridge, I think one made by Panasonic is best…

Long live the theories of Deng Xiaoping! A fridge with dual-opening doors can’t be thin. The thinnest refrigerator on the market is 66 centimeters wide.

The Senkaku Islands belong to China. Is your apartment very low?

The relationship you have with your father or mother is not as good as your relationship with Chairman Mao. As far and wide as the heavens and earth are, they aren’t as wide as the benovolence of the Party. I think that Samsung is pretty good for open door refrigerators.

“However bold the people dare to be is how much the land will yield to them.” (A People’s Daily quote from 1958 best associated with the disastrous Great Leap Forward campaign). Panasonic isn’t too bad. The Senkaku Islands belong to China.

Here are more netizen comments on the original Christine Fan controversy and more:

香吉士君:
There is no difference between the Red Guard and those who are mentally retarded, they are both extreme products of society.

莫良先森:
When all is said and done, China has a lot of angry youths (known colloquially as ‘fenqing‘). They think that by with their so-called morality, they can look down on other people, the majority of which don’t have any “magnificent” feats of their own. Feeling pride for your country is shouting slogans. What a joke this Fan controversy is. For one thing, no laws were broken. Secondly, no morals were violated. How has Christine Fan ‘sinned’? As a mother, is it wrong to show off pictures of your own children?

Katherine_Guo:
This is just horrific, the last remnants of the Cultural Revolution remain everywhere…

匹诺陶:
Just stick a Chinese national flag on all refrigerators made by capitalist countries!

National pride from last week’s military parade has carried over to vacationing Chinese tourists who protested a flight delay at Bangkok International Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand by singing the Chinese national anthem.

Chinese passengers began loudly protesting and making a commotion after their Chongqing flight was repeatedly delayed from a scheduled 5:50pm Beijing local time departure on September 4.

Weibo accounts of the incident say Bangkok airport staff attempted to herd away the delayed Chinese passengers, thereby sparking the cantankerous protest. According to the Thailand Lifestyle Guide, the singing Chinese passengers were also taken away, although no more official details have been released.

As seen in the video of the incident (below), the protest begins with Chinese passengers simply making loud noises and howls. When women located near the person recording the video begin to sing the Chinese national anthem, many of the protesting Chinese passengers begin to join in, one by one. With the anthem growing louder and getting off-key, many of the protesting passengers are heard loudly shouting the Chinese anthem by the end of the video rather than trying to sing it.

The national anthem of the People’s Republic of China March of the Volunteers contains lyrics of rebellion and violence. The first line of the anthem is “Arise, all of you whom want to be slaves no more!” and ends with doubling a lyric that encourages singers to charge and brave enemy fire.

The national pride on display by the protesting Chinese passengers appears to be in response to perceived discrimination from Thai airport workers. One netizen who wrote about the incident said, “This isn’t just Thailand disrespecting us tourists, but also not treating us as equals.

Another people spoke of the need for compensation. None of us lack money, and the Chinese yuan is a currency respected worldwide. But do we want this compensation? Yes!None of us lack money, and the Chinese yuan is a currency respected worldwide. But do we want this compensation? Yes!

The Chinese passengers had three demands: for Bangkok Airport to give them a public apology; for a Boeing 747 to come fetch them and fly them back to China; and to receive compensation of RMB 1,000 ($157) each.

However, it does not appear that the protesting Chinese passengers got their wish. By the afternoon of September 5, all Chinese passengers are described to have returned to Chongqing on a 5am departing flight, including 33 passengers who attempted to refuse.

The name of the airline that delayed service to the passengers was not named in reports. However, it is likely that it is a domestic Chinese airliner since the passengers are not seeking compensation from their local travel agencies. As well, a Chongqing tourism bureau is investigating the incident.

Here’s the video:

The woman killed in a brazen knife attack in Sanlitun on August 13 was laid to rest in an eastern Beijing suburb funeral home yesterday. Friends and family of a Shandong woman now identified as Isabella, who was 28, mourned her passing. .

Last Thursday, Isabella and her French husband were walking by Tai Koo Mall in Beijing’s upscale Sanlitun District when they were attacked by a man armed with a sword.  A 25 year-old man named Gao from Tonghua, Jilin Province was arrested at the scene, where he stood holding his sword.

News on the attack in the Chinese media has been vague. For example, the relationship between Isabella and her husband was not made clear in reports a day after the attack. However, at the same time, Beijing police were adamant that the attacks occurred for “no reason” because the attacker had no motive.

However, for the first time, Chinese media is beginning to publish details of the attack that claim they may have been provoked by nationalist tendencies. As the People’s Daily Online reported, a friend of the French husband recalls that the attacker had asked if the man was an American citizen.

Social media had pointed out this theory before on Twitter. Over on Weibo, netizens have also considered that the August 13 attack was sparked by anti-American sentiment, while others don’t think so, saying the attack was by a “loser” who is angry at the world.

Here are some of their comments posted on the Global Times, a nationalist newspaper:

百羊凶:
Husband and wife were out for a walk on the street when the killer came up to them, asking the man if he is an American. Answering that he is from France, he began to lead his wife away from the scene. The murderer fatally stabbed the wife, and then injured the husband. Clearly, the two sides did not know each other. The killer hates foreigners, has contempt for women, thinks women are some kind of resource, and that her marrying a foreigner is disrespecting him. Instead of looking within himself to find the reason why he’s not able to marry a woman, he blames women for his problems. What a loser, and a cancer to society.

默默想养只猫:
Male chauvinists objectify women by treating them like a resource to exploit. Why is it that a Chinese man who marries a foreign woman is praised, but a Chinese woman who marries a foreign man is criticized? What kind of rationale is this?

无畏高尔察克:
Extremists are the shame of all the people.

M16dwg:
Global Times newspaper is the grand nationalist headquarters of hating the USA and the West.

塞上啸:
Is the Global Times thinking about performing a follow-up interview? Where does the murderer, who hates all Americans, normally get his information? By what propaganda is he influenced by?

查理布朗的小狗:
Isn’t the killer a member of your Global Times target audience?

陌上花開可歸矣萧萧:
I don’t understand: just what does this story have to do with nationalism? What does this chauvinist man and Global Times have to do with each other? What does he have to do with national educational policies?

塔总的柠檬茶:
I’m speechless at reading the comments. What the frig does this have to do with nationalism? If you really love your country, then you’ll work hard, make contributions, or become a soldier. Or, to say something extreme, if you have what it takes, you’ll go over to the USA and kill an American. But what does it prove to kill a woman that belongs to your own country? This is simply a chauvinist man who isn’t able to marry a woman, a coward of a bully. This is just misogyny, that’s all.

Magnetj:
Those people who can watch their countrymen get murdered and then just write them off for having married a foreigner should get themselves checked into a mental hospital!

Gallifrey星的肉包被大圣苏飞:
Some people who have written some of these comments are just despicable.

moirae007:
This has nothing to do with nationalism. This is a loser trying to vent his frustration.

Students at the University of Fuzhou are disobeying a direct order from President Xi Jinping and refusing to go to bed early.

As of April 15, Economics and Management students at the University have pledged to get to bed at a decent hour, going so far as to swear an oath online, and even agreeing to receive a nightly text message in which President Xi specifically orders them to go to bed. The President, who is concerned about the leaders of tomorrow not getting enough sleep, sends the message at 10:40pm, 20 minutes before the agreed upon curfew of 11pm. The message reads as follows:

My dear, are you asleep yet? I am the fairy of early sleep; don’t you remember that you said you would go to bed before 11pm? Uncle Xi is telling you to go to bed early, for this makes for a healthy body!

Lu Yanhong, a secretary for the students, explains the University’s motivation for the idea:

We see Uncle Xi’s warm suggestion as a way to promote health and a good night’s sleep.

As exciting as it may be to receive a text message from the President each and every night, students at Fuzhou University haven’t been particularly receptive. Of the 434 students that signed contracts agreeing to go to bed early, only 40 are still complying less than a moth since the initiative kicked off.

President Xi first made the suggestion that China’s youth should get to bed before midnight earlier this year. Xi blamed the high incidence of illness among Chinese students to staying up too late. At the time, netizens responded to Xi’s suggestion with “begrudging acceptance”.

Since coming to power, President Xi has been involved in a number public initiatives that have either become law or have become popular discussion topics, such as his belief that China has too many “weird buildings“, has an education system with too much Western influence, and that the country should invest more time and money to become better at soccer.

The year 1997 was when Hong Kong reunified with China, but it was also the year that the territory arguably lost its two biggest stars: Jackie Chan and Andy Lau. Even though they didn’t go anywhere, their post-97 personas are very clear: Chan and Lau are now China’s superstars.

Lau’s transition to being loved by all of China can be traced back to his ingratiating Putonghua language song, We Are All Chinese, while Chan has proved his love of all things China during his verbose interviews. And while neither have lost their Cantonese accents, Chan keeps giving interviews that never fail to be eye-opening, or at least entertaining.

During a screening for his new movie Dragon Blade in Beijing, Chan was quick to wrap himself up in the Chinese flag to avoid any criticism during questioning. When asked if his new film, which is about the protection of China’s Silk Road, has anything at all to do with current policies that target revitalization in the same area, Chan was immediately dismissive. And then, to back himself up, Chan also said:

I’ve wanted to make this movie for seven years. You can check all the records, even though I am just a layman, but I have always loved my country, even up to today. Should a person not love his country? Is it wrong to love your country? If loving your country means getting criticized, then you can all criticize me!

And to emphasize that he is deeply, madly, truly in love with China, Chan also said:

30 years ago my movies were all about patriotism. I hope that with every movie I’m able to pass on this love of the country.

Dragon Blade has made RMB 700 million since opening on February 19 during the Spring Festival holiday. Dragon Blade also stars John Cusack as a Roman general fleeing from the persecution of the scheming older brother to the heir to the empire, played by Adrian Brody.

Anti-mosquito campaign in Foshan.

Dengue fever has become a full-blown epidemic in Guangdong, with the province’s Bureau for Health and Family Planning reporting the number of cases has risen to 23,146. With more people dying from the disease, the government is asking the public to lend a patriotic hand in addressing the epidemic.

With six deaths and thousands of new cases being reported every day, it is hard to believe that Dengue fever is preventable, curable, and controllable. Yang Zhicong, deputy head of the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control, said that although the situation appears dire, the Dengue fever epidemic should be under control by the end of October:

Guangzhou and many other regions have recently adopted measures to prevent the proliferation of Dengue Fever and to destroy mosquitoes and their spawning areas. At present, we are making progress.

The progress Yang refers to includes a government “patriotic hygiene campaign” to combat Dengue fever, declaring that every citizen has a duty to help stop the epidemic by eradicating mosquitoes and their spawning pools.

The following pictures of mass outdoor fumigation show citizens doing their part:

The chemical clouds of smoke have been described as an “anti-mosquito agent” and is being used on a grand scale. While Foshan just launched a city-wide mosquito eradication campaign, Guangzhou has been at it for much longer. Every day, 160 face-mask wearing “eradicating mosquito heroes” in Guangzhou spray 35 kilograms of the mystery agent.

my little apple dance video internet meme propaganda military enlistmentIn case you haven’t heard the song or seen the video yet (and you probably have), My Little Apple is a music video from the film “Old Boys: The Ferocious Dragon Crosses the River” by the Chopstick Brothers that has gone viral in China (you can watch it below).

The song itself is pedestrian ditty in which an apple is used as a metaphor to symbolize one’s feelings towards a lover, but the song shines as a vehicle to showcase absurd comedy that is de rigeur in China in the absence of any insightful satire.

However, the song’s true mass appeal lies in the emulation of its dance that, let’s face it, concentrates movements away from the hips and into the upper body, appealing to dancing grannies in public squares all around the country (here are examples of tribute videos).

We saw a huge outpouring of spoof videos during the last dance phenomenon to hit China, Gangnam Style, and it looks like everyone wants in on this latest Chinese internet meme, up to and including the Ministry of Defense. While the Ministry features enlisted service personnel dancing in its video, it also features things the other videos don’t: namely military jets and rockets.

As reported by China Daily, this video was made by the Ministry of Defense and serves as a recruitment tool. While you listen to a song with lyrics about how love is like an apple, the Ministry of Defense urges viewers to take up arms and charge to the front lines in order to defeat China’s enemies all while featuring military personnel taking the time out of their busy schedules to line dance on camera.

Here’s the video:

And if watching the visual spectacle isn’t enough for you, here is a translation of the text that appears onscreen along with notes when they appear in the song so that you can sing along in English if you’d like:

My Little Apple (text by Ministry of Defense)

Each person, each youth, all have a dream
and have wonderful rights and privileges

As they reap a life without regret

punishing evil and eliminating traitors with a steel will?
Run to the army and become a soldier!
Let each peaceful sun set and rise become warmer

Pick up a pen, join the military
Fulfill your dreams in an army barrack
