While airline delays are common in China, one airport is being singled out for making the problem worse.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has suspended Shenzhen’s Bao’an Airport from adding new flights and routes due to its ineffective handling of flight delays. The suspension will last until the end of the year.
On July 31, the CAAC released an extensive report detailing the growing number of delays at Shenzhen Airport. The report singled out Shenzhen Airlines and China United Airlines for their particularly poor management.
Many of the incidents occurred last May when China United Airlines flight KN5858 was delayed four hours after an emergency door was opened by a passenger; Shenzhen Airlines ZH9249 was delayed after a passenger stormed into a restricted hallway; and Shenzhen Airlines ZH9869 was delayed after a passenger boarded a plane before the flight crew. Later that month, a China Southern Airlines flight was delayed when a passenger got into a fight with the flight crew.
May also saw a number of flights delayed or cancelled due to heavy rain, further enraging passengers and resulting in near riots. On May 21, a plane belonging to China Southern Airlines collided with another plane on the tarmac at Shenzhen Airport.
