If Leonardo DiCaprio was ever lacking in friends, he’s now made 1.3 million new ones just by joining Sina Weibo.
DiCaprio wrote his first post on Saturday, simply telling fans “Hello, China! (then switches to Chinese) I am Leonardo.” (shown below)
It was an auspicious beginning for the Oscar-winning actor. In less than a week, the comment attracted 737,000 likes and nearly 200,000 comments, mostly written in Chinese.
One of the top rated comments written in English told DiCaprio, “Welcome to Weibo! We are so excited that Chinese fans can take a step closer to you, and know more things about you and your films. Hope we will have a good communication.”
Others welcomed DiCaprio by posting photos of the celebrity with their own captions added:
(You’ve succeeded in getting my attention)
(Amid the waves)
The first film named in DiCaprio’s Weibo account was Titanic (1997), a film that served as one of China’s highest grossing films for a number of years. For this reason, DiCaprio is widely known throughout China as recognition of this film continues to eclipse his recent releases like Inception (2010).
Buzz surrounding DiCaprio’s Oscar win propelled his Chinese promotional tour for The Revenant this past spring. DiCaprio used the opportunity to flatter his hosts by saying he believed China could one day become “the hero of the environmental movement”.
Other Western celebrities who have found themselves a huge Chinese following upon opening a Weibo account include Stephen Hawking and Jeremy Lin.
