Nicknamed “Ice Stream” for the way it resembles a waterfall, a new dessert pairs “ramen” and ice cream in the same bowl.
A concoction of traditional Japanese kanten noodles made from algae, the dessert is served over a bed of shaved ice, and then topped with condensed milk, mochi balls, frozen cantaloupe and mango.
Ramen ice cream doesn’t actually contain any real ramen or noodles, but that doesn’t seem to detract from the dessert. A reporter with Today who tried the stringy dessert in New York reported, “I could slurp the noodles — which were slick and cool on my tongue — and drink the ‘broth’ (the ice cream)”.
The invention of Manhattan culinary boutique, The Dessert Kitchen, has photos of ramen ice cream which have been trending on Instagram and have become enormously popular among foodies. The photos have been going viral in China and have been picked up by several newspapers.
Dessert Kitchen owner, Candice Auyang, said recognition for the dish has been a long time coming. “Our chef Dominic Li conceived this dish about a decade ago at our first location in Hong Kong,” said Auyang, adding that the noodles are hand-cut by the store’s chefs.
This isn’t the first appearance of the unlikely pairing of ramen and ice cream. A Japanese ramen shop called Kikuya began offering ice cream cone ramen to its customers. Unlike ramen ice cream, it more than lives up to its name:
As Rocketnews 24 reported, the inspiration behind the ice cream cone ramen was very simple. The shopkeeper told them, “The kids around here asked me to make it, so I made it.”
