Starting in March, the Malaysian government will waive all visa requirements for Chinese tourists.
The new visa-free policy follows earlier attempts to boost Malaysian tourism by attracting Chinese tourists. Last October, the country introduced a new waiver program designed to attract Chinese tour groups, as well as introducing an “e-visa” that would make applying for travel documents more convenient in China.
Malaysian tourism has suffered following the Malaysian Airlines MH370 tragedy. 154 Chinese nationals remain unaccounted for since the airliner went missing in March of 2014. Between 2013 and 2014, Chinese tourism in Malaysia declined by 40 percent.
Although they welcome tourists of all nationalities, Chinese tourists are especially prized by Malaysian officials. Last year, Malaysian Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz shared his enthusiasm over Chinese tourists by saying, “The Chinese economy is doing well, their tourists are quality tourists and they have the money.”
