If you’re a smoker in China, you probably noticed the price of cigarettes just went up. Taxes on all cigarettes sold in China have more than doubled from five percent to 11 percent to coincide with an anti-smoking campaign across the country.
The tax hike came into effect last Sunday, marking the first tax hike on cigarettes since 2009.This past spring has seen the announcement of numerous new regulations as part of a strict anti-smoking campaign. On June 1, smoking will be banned at all public spaces in Beijing, while smoking was also recently banned on Chinese television programs.
