Woman’s Epic Rant About Hospital Scalpers Goes Viral, Becomes National News

Ticket scalping at hospital a long ignored problem

An epic rant has been caught on video in which a woman complains for three minutes, galvanizing Chinese people and earning the woman a lot of support.

On January 19, a woman was recorded making an impassioned public outburst at the Guangmingmen Hospital in Beijing. The woman complained as loudly as she could that she hadn’t been able to secure a number to book an appointment with a doctor. She placed the blame on ticket scalpers that snatch up most of the available tickets in the morning, and then make a profit by selling them to sick patients in need of a doctor.

In the video, the woman explained, “The scalpers wanted me to pay RMB 4500 for a ticket worth RMB 300. How can an average person (like me) get a ticket and see a doctor without breaking the bank?”

The woman also offered a simple, if inflammatory, reason for the continued existence of the scalpers:  “The hospital and the scalpers must be working together.

The woman didn’t spare any mercy for the scalpers. “We (average) people can only depend on ourselves and arrive early to wait in line, only to be unsuccessful in getting a ticket. But you ticket scalpers, no matter what we say about you, you’ll stand in line even if its freezing. What are you?” she asked. “There will be ten of you in a single line waiting for the same thing. Why are you so adamant about getting all the tickets? You sit here all day on a stool, not moving even once.

The woman ended with a warning for all of China. “In this great city of Beijing, if I were to die while going home today, then there is no hope for society,” the woman cautioned. “That’s Beijing for you, the capital of the country.

The woman was seen crying by the end of the rant, and was seen calling police before the video ended.

Rants are common on the Internet, but this one struck a nerve. After achieving viral status, several Chinese news reported the case, forcing the hospital to issue a statement.

The Beijing Guanganmen Hospital said it will conduct an investigation into the matter, but was emphatic that there are no ticket scalpers at the hospital, nor are any hospital staff colluding with them. Furthermore, the hospital said it had made arrangements for the woman to get an appointment.

Local police are said to be investigating the incident. However, the National Health and Family Planning Association has deferred an investigation to its local Beijing chapter.

An acquaintance of the woman told Beijing Youth Report the woman is too scared to go back to the hospital due to several threats she has received since the incident from scalpers.

“The harassment kept happening for a couple of days afterwards, and was really terrifying,” said the acquaintance. “She said this hospital is very effective at treating the illness her mother has, but is afraid of encountering any risks when bringing her mother in for treatment.”

The scalpers had reportedly told her, “Even if you were first in line, I could see to it that you’d never see a doctor.

National attention, responses from state organizations, and personal threats… all from a simple rant about a problem that people tend to ignore. The truth has never been more potent a force in China.
