Seven elementary schoolchildren and two adults were attacked by a knife-wielding assailant on Friday afternoon in the Province of Shaanxi. The attack took place in a lane across from an elementary school in the Sanlicun District of Hanzhou. The majority of the student victims, who were outside eating lunch, are said to be in grade one.

The attacker was subdued by security guards from a hotel nearby. Conflicting reports say he had either a one meter-long knife or an ax.

Identified as 58 year-old Lei Mingyue, the suspected reportedly confessed to police that he wanted to take revenge against society.

Reports also quote witnesses saying the man seemed to be suffering from some sort of mental illness. Other reports say the man was reeking of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Knife attacks happen sporadically throughout China, and tend to target children. This past March, ten schoolchildren were attacked at an elementary school in Haikou, Hainan, while four were killed in a September 2014 attack in Guangxi.

Three Chinese students were arrested last week by Korean police on Jeju Island following the assault of a restaurant employee.

The assault allegedly occurred around 4am after the worker repeatedly asked four Chinese students to leave the restaurant so that they could close.

Instead of complying, the students demanded more alcohol. When the worker refused to serve them, the students began to threaten him. As the Korea Times reported, the Chinese students threw water bottles shouting in Korean, “Are you ignoring us because we’re Chinese?”

“The students insisted that it was OK for them to drink due to the time gap between the two countries,” said an employee of the restaurant who witnessed the assault. “They were angered from the beginning when we couldn’t serve them the food they ordered because we were out of ingredients. They started to think they were being mistreated because they were Chinese and started behaving aggressively.”

Two of the Chinese students were arrested at the scene, while a third was sent to hospital due to an injury.

Eight Chinese tourists were arrested in September for assaulting a Jeju Island restaurant owner who was hospitalized after being hit in the head with a bottle, a story Chinese media attempted to downplay by reporting the assault victim was a “Chinese compatriot”.

Later the same month, a Chinese tourist was arrested hours after he murdered an elderly Jeju Island South Korean woman, stabbing her to death as she prayed in a church. At a memorial for the victim, Chinese exchange students living on Jeju Island denounced the violence and said the actions of one person can’t represent the entire country of China (shown above).

Jeju Island is a popular resort region for mainland tourists as it has no visa restrictions, however the string of violent attacks has prompted calls from local residents to repeal its visa-free status.

During the National Day holiday season, dozens of Chinese tourists visiting Jeju Island were detained and denied entry to South Korea.

Chinese people are outraged following a vicious assault on a 59 year-old street cleaner in Suzhou, Jiangsu which left him bloodied and unconscious in hospital.

A fight broke last Monday night on Suzhou’s Pingjiang Road between sanitation worker He Yanlong and a dog owner named Xu after He appeared to hit Xu’s dog with his cleaning cart.

Thepaper.cn reported that the black dog, which was not on a leash, did not appear to have been struck on surveillance video.

After the argument escalated into a brawl, Xu’s wife can be seen in the video holding He’s arms, preventing him from defending himself. As CCTV reported, Xu punched He 34 times during the two minute altercation, with He slumping to the ground once Xu was finished.street sanitation worker assault

Bystanders prevented Xu and his wife from leaving the scene, although they did not interfere at any point during the assault. The two are currently under administrative detention by the police.

PPTV reported that both sides hit each other and sustained injuries, although photos of He’s bloodied face have shocked Chinese people, who traditionally treat elders with respect.

Among the 7,300 comments left on a CCTV Weibo post about the incident, netizens lashed out at Xu, calling him “crazy”, “no better than a dog”, and called for his personal information to be exposed to the public.

One netizen wrote, “It pains my heart to see a man of about 60 years beaten like this.” Another person asked why Chinese society tends to look down on street cleaners, saying: ” (Street sweeping) is a profession that honestly serves the people.  I salute you.”

Traffic fatalities of street sweepers are commonly reported in China, as they are often hit by cars in traffic.

Here’s a video of the incident.

Hundreds of Chinese-Americans marched last Saturday in Philadelphia to protest against violent crime targeting their communities.

Wearing shirts and carrying signs that read “no more violence”, the protest comes after a rash of robberies and home invasions. Rally organizer, Stephen Zhu, said a dozen Chinese families were victimized in July and August.

Protestor Chen Caiqiu, a 20-year resident of the United States, believes Chinese need to take a stand on behalf of their community: “Chinese are good-hearted and hard-working, and want to live in harmony with society. They should not be viewed as weak targets who suffer unjust treatment,” said Chen. “My participation in this anti-violence and justice protest is to show that victims need to make their voices heard. Any kind of violence should be punished by the law.”

At least 40 of the protestors were seen openly carrying firearms.

Li Ran, a member of the Greater Philadelphia Chinese Gun Club, explained that “We want criminals to understand that we are armed,” and wanted to make more members of the Chinese-American community aware of the “lawful methods” by which they can protect themselves.

Earlier this month, grocery store manger Chen Fengzhu used a gun to repel three armed men who attempted to invade her Georgia home, killing one in the process.

The protest took place on the same day as a local performance by rapper YG, who is accused of inciting crime against the Chinese-American community. YG’s song Meet the Flockers contains lyrics about how to carry out a home burglary, including:

First, you find a house and scope it out
Find a Chinese neighborhood, cause they don’t believe in bank accounts

The song originally appeared on the album My Krazy Life, described by Rolling Stone as “one of the best albums of 2014”. A petition to ban the song on the White House website We the People has successfully gathered over 100,000 signatures.

Two Beijing expats have been targeted in separate knife attacks by a cleaver-wielding Chinese woman north of the city’s popular Sanlitun nightlife area.

The Beijinger reported the attacks were committed by the same woman Sunday morning. She apparently made disparaging remarks about the victims’ nationalities immediately before attacking.

The victim of the first attack was a French expat cycling on Xinyuan South Road northwest of the Capital Mansion residential high-rise. The Beijinger quotes a person who talked to the French victim who said the assailant yelled “American! American” in Chinese as she attacked with a knife.

The second attack occurred as a Jamaican expat was departing a Sunday church service for foreign passport holders at Capital Mansion Athletic Club. As the victim was exiting the parking lot, she was approached by the attacker who asked in Mandarin, “Do you speak Chinese?” Before the Jamaican expat could answer, she was attacked.

Both victims sustained wounds in the attacks, and were treated at the nearby Raffles Medical Clinic for non-severe injuries.

The knife-wielding assailant was last seen in the back of a Public Security Bureau vehicle, in which she was whisked away (shown above).

Although rare, violent crimes targeting foreigners have occurred before in Beijing, sometimes resulting in fatalities.

On the first day of competition during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, the father-in-law of the US volleyball coach was fatally stabbed to death while visiting a local tourist attraction. Todd Bachman died from his wounds while his attacker, a 47 year-old Chinese national named Tang Yongming, killed himself by immediately jumping off the balcony of the 130-foot tall Drum Tower.

Other violent attacks targeting foreign nationals have been blamed on mental illness.

In 2012,  62 year-old American Howard Thomas Mills was stabbed to death in Beijing’s Xicheng District. The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau released a statement saying the suspect arrested in Mills’ stabbing, 35 year-old An Libo, was believed to have suffered from a mental disorder.

An American was one of two deaths that occurred from a knife attack at Beijing’s Joy City Mall in 2013. Xinhua reported the 27 year-old assailant from Shandong, who was immediately captured by police, suffers from an undisclosed mental illness.

Last year, a man wielding a sword attacked a French expat and his Chinese wife at Taikoo Mall in Sanlitun, resulting in the wife’s death. Unlike other the attacks, the assailant was not said to have suffered from mental illness; instead, Beijing police said the attacker, a man named Gao from Jilin, “randomly” chose his victims and attacked them for “no reason”. However, the People’s Daily quoted a friend of the French victim who said he was asked if he was an American citizen just before the attack.

Last Christmas, the UK and US embassies warned of a possible threat against foreign nationals in the Sanlitun area, although no threat ever materialized.

A Chinese tourist is dead and her husband seriously injured after being stabbed by their Chinese tour guide at the famous Masaai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya.

Lee Changqing stabbed Luo Jinli, 45, and her husband Dong, 47, over an argument about the seating arrangements at the game reserve’s Keekorok Lodge. Luo died from her chest wounds and Dong is being treated at the Nairobi Hospital.

“The tour guide who had brought three clients from his country for two nights differed with the couple … over the seating arrangement at dinner time,” said John Kiruti, manager of Keekorok Lodge. “After a brief exchange of words, he drew a knife and stabbed the two, fatally injuring the woman and injuring her husband.”

Kiruti said the couple’s two children, aged 9 and 12, witnessed the stabbing.

“The hotel staff rushed to restrain the guide. The kids are still in shock,” he said.

Abdi Galgalo, of the Narok County Police, reported that Lee had been arrested and was currently being held at the Narok Police Station. “It was a sad incident that is deeply regretted,” said Galgalo.

The victim and her family had come to see the migration of wildebeest at the Masaai Mara, an event that has become very popular among Chinese tourists.

A second-year postgraduate student has been charged in the gruesome murder of his ex-girlfriend at a Shanghai university famous for its gender imbalance.

Pudong New Area prosecutors announced Monday they have charged student Xu Bin for the April 30 murder of his ex-girlfriend Zhou Ting. Both were students at the Shanghai Maritime University. Xu was enrolled in its merchant ship institution.

Prosecutors said Xu explained Zhou had met a new person in her life back in January, and wanted to end her relationship with Xu. Prosecutors say Xu wouldn’t accept Zhou’s decision, and as a result he became more hostile towards her.

Xu had threatened to beat up Zhou’s new boyfriend, but Zhou ridiculed him by saying he wasn’t “strong enough”, Shanghai Daily reported. In response, Xu began to flood Zhou’s chat account with numerous harassing messages.

Xu planned his retaliation long in advance of the April 30 murder. On March 30, he purchased a knife, a bottle of hydrofluoric acid, and six bottles of alcohol from an online retailer. As Xu had reportedly told police: “They were both purchased to prove that I have the ability to threaten them both.

On April 29, Xu attempted one last time to reconcile over the phone with Zhou, but she refused.

Xu’s last updates to his QQ account were made on the same day. “What’s coming is coming, and can’t be avoided,” and “Grand conclusion, a grand tragedy“.

The next morning when he saw Zhou and her new boyfriend together on campus, Xu became very angry. After retrieving his knife and acid, he asked for a “negotiation” with the couple. Zhou and her new boyfriend refused, and attempted to contact police.

At this time, he caught Zhou on the fourth floor of the Shanghai Maritime University library. Xu took out the acid, and poured it over Zhou’s head, face, chest, and arms. Xu then used his knife to stab Zhou multiple times in the chest.

Zhou died in hospital due to hemorrhagic shock hours later.

Xu was eventually arrested by police on a rooftop before he was to commit suicide.

In other news, the Shanghai Maritime University has recently gained public attention for having an overwhelming skewed gender imbalance at the same department of the university where Xu was enrolled.

Two weeks ago, viral news centered upon a birthday given by 280 male students of the university’s merchant ship institution to its only female student. The male students are seen standing in a long line by the side of the road to offer birthday greetings 19 year-old Wu Xun, the merchant ship institution’s first and only female student.

An American man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by a US federal court after confessing to sexually molesting four young boys in China and documenting their abuse.

Kelly James Morrow (shown below), 49, pleaded guilty to two charges last April: sexual exploitation of children outside the United States and possession of child pornography.

“This defendant is a sexual predator who not only abused young boys – he also documented their physical and mental abuse by taking thousands of pictures of his victims,” said United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker.

child molestor

“Just as Morrow’s photographs continued to victimize boys that he molested, his massive collection of child pornography victimized every one of the hundreds of child abuse victims depicted in those images.”

Morrow was arrested June 2015 at Los Angeles Airport after arriving from Singapore with computer equipment that contained 60,000 images and videos depicting child pornography.

Morrow had made the images while working on golf course projects in China. He had previously held an Arizona address before moving abroad.

“This case serves as a strong reminder that any abuse of children by American citizens is a crime that will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Joseph Macias, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations Los Angeles.

China’s legions of internet users regularly use social platforms like WeChat and Weibo to keep in touch with each other, but one of the darker sides of social media is the wide circulation of ugly videos.

One recent video shows a man squatting down to protect himself as a younger man kicks him repeatedly until another man joins in, hitting the man with a leather belt.

beating

The video took place in Qujing, Yunnan. Police say the victim is a man with mental health issues who was falsely accused of being a thief.

Another video shows a group of boys and girls ganging up on a girl that attends a different school in Nanyang, Henan. The victim is slapped by the girls, kicked by the boys, and then has water poured onto her head. Throughout the bullying, the video depicts others at the scene also recording the incident on their phones, with some even posing for the camera.

The prosecutor’s office for Guangdong recently released a report claiming that school violence in China is not a major issue.

A Chinese citizen that killed his girlfriend in the US and then returned to China has been given life in jail by a Chinese court. Li Xiangnan confessed to the murder of 20 year-old Iowa State University exchange student, Shao Tong, in a Wenzhou courtroom.

Li, a former University of Iowa exchange student, admitted to arguing with Shao on September 7, 2014, before strangling her in a fit of rage.

li xiangnan shao tong murder

When Shao’s body was found in the trunk of her own car three weeks later, Li had already returned to China.

Shao’s father, Shao Chunsheng, expressed his disappointment with the sentence: “We were at least expecting a death sentence even though we had accepted the compensation,” he said. “But what can we do? We can only accept the judgment.”

Shao’s family accepted a two million yuan ($300,000) civil settlement with Li’s family back in March, a factor the judge noted in his decision not to sentence Li to death. The judge also said the defendant expressed remorse for his actions, and had willingly surrendered himself to police.

Many wondered if Li would ever stand trial for Shao’s murder. Iowa police said they were hamstrung by the unprecedented nature of the case. After returning to China, Li spent eight months on the run while the case failed to gain momentum in the US, owing to the absence of an extradition treaty with China. But in April 2015, a CNN report was broadcast showing Shao’s father urging both US and Chinese authorities to do more to seek justice for his daughter.

A month later, Li surrendered to police. He was formally charged in June of 2015.
