Shenzhen traffic Police have concocted an unusual punishment for drivers improperly using their high beams: the “green chair”.

Violators are forced to sit on the chair in front of their car and stare into their own high beams for five minutes. The logic is that by giving violators a dose of their own medicine it will encourage proper use of high beams. Violators are also fined 300 yuan, and one point is deducted from their driver’s license.

The Shenzhen traffic police have been doling out this punishment since 2014, but they are now using the green chair as a symbol of punishment and shame.

Shenzhen traffic police also used green hats last summer to shame jaywalkers.

Although Chinese netizens were mostly supportive of the headlight punishment, they believed the green hat punishment was cruel. Police dodged the accusation that they were actively trying to shame traffic violators by explaining that green was the uniform color chosen for the temporary traffic warden outfit, consisting of a hat and vest.

A former Chinese race car champion was among those arrested after a video of two sports cars racing on a busy Shanghai highway went viral.

Zhang Zhendong, a member of the racing team “Lingrui 300+” and a former China Touring Car Championship winner, was one of the drivers arrested. Zhang was driving a red Porsche GT3 that reached speeds of 183 kilometers per hour during the race.

The other vehicle, an Infiniti, was driven by car mechanic, Yang Zhengxing.

The video showed the passenger’s perspective as Yang chased after Zhang, weaving in and out of traffic and narrowly missing other cars.

The chase started at Handan Road Tunnel and ended up at the Pudong exit of the Jungong Road Tunnel. The two drivers covered about 11 kilometers in about 10 minutes.

Yang said he did not personally know Zhang; but, he wanted to race the driver upon seeing the Porsche. “All I thought about was to race the Porsche for sheer excitement,” he said. Both drivers did not own the cars they were racing.

Shanghai Daily reported they both face a maximum of six months detention and fines for illegal lane change and speeding.

China’s fascination with high-end sports cars is reflected in the country’s top-grossing Hollywood film of all time, Furious 7, as well as domestic features like Mr Six. Although ownership of such rare and expensive cars is limited to the very few, collisions involving these cars are common in China.

A McLaren P1 supercar worth $2 million crashed in Hangzhou this past April. In March of 2015, a Ferrari 458 worth, $300,000, split in two after hitting a tree in Foshan. Similar fates have befallen Lamborghinis and Maseratis.

You can watch the video here.

A Shanghai court handed down a lighter sentence to an American-Chinese woman caught drinking and driving because she is pregnant.

The Jing’an District People’s Court sentenced the US citizen, named Yan, to three months in prison, a three month suspended sentence, and a 5,000 yuan ($760) fine. The court argued that were the woman not pregnant, the sentence would have been more severe.

At around 3am on April 12, security footage captured Yan driving away from the Yan’an Hotel parking lot in her white SUV where she immediately smashed into a gate, a lamp post, and another car.shanghai drunk driver pregnantWhen given a breathalyzer test by police, Yan blew well over the legal limit. Shanghai traffic police have announced that they will now accept dash-mounted videos from people that show evidence of a traffic violation.

However, in order for the police to press charges and issue fines based on the evidence, certain conditions need to be met.

First, the violation must have occurred within three days of reporting it. Secondly, the video must feature road signs or other distinguishing features that clearly show where the violation occurred. Finally, videos cannot be longer than 60 seconds, and 100MB in size.

Shanghai traffic police say they will investigate each submission within 15 business days. City residents who make a submission can follow the complaints progress online.

Although the Shanghai Public Security Bureau was initially hesitant to adopt dash-cam evidence, other jurisdictions in China have openly embraced it. In May 2014, Shenzhen authorized the use of dash cams in its ambulances to help prosecute drivers who fail to yield right-of-way to ambulances.

Dash cams have become increasingly popular in China as a way for drivers to protect themselves against being extorted in “broken vase” scams. The cameras have also been important in capturing road rage incidents.

Want to make the streets of Shanghai safer? You can submit a video here. For now, services are only available in Chinese.

A rare McLaren P1 supercar, worth $2 million, was totalled in a collision with another vehicle in Yiwu, Zhejiang, near Hangzhou. The silver-colored supercar sustained major damage to both sides of the car after spinning out, colliding with a fence, and rear ending a Roewe.

The driver, a 20 year-old Yiwu resident named Liu, walked away with only minor injuries. Liu admitted that he was unable to avoid the collision because he was driving too fast. He had only a provincial driver’s license and accepted all responsibility for the crash. Police are continuing their investigation.

The McLaren P1 began production in 2013. All 375 finished models have been sold. The electric and gas hybrid car features a 903 horsepower engine that can go 0-100 kilometers per hour in just 2.8 seconds.

When it comes to driving, Shanghai traffic police are not particularly impressed with the city’s foreign exchange students.  As part of a traffic law awareness campaign, Shanghai police were spotted passing out “road safety notices” at the Shanghai International Studies University. The notices were written in English, Russian, Korean, and Japanese.

Traffic police say they fined 20 foreign exchange students for driving violations in Hongkou District alone last month. The most common violations are driving a scooter without a license plate and carrying a passenger.

Whether deserved or not, the Chinese media think foreign students are terrible drivers. The title of this story reads “Foreign students constantly violating traffic regulations”. The sentiment was echoed by school official Zhou Bo who said, “Foreign students are not very well informed about traffic laws and rules in China, and we hope through this effort they can be better prepared to avoid traffic offenses.”

An average of 4,300 international student enroll at Shanghai International Studies University every year.

A height restriction barrier tore through a double decker tour bus in Zhengzhou, Henan injuring eleven passengers.

The incident occurred just outside the ring road of the city’s commercial district at the intersection at Ping’an Boulevard. There were 57 people on board the bus when it collided with the sign that clearly stated a height clearance of three meters.

In a media interview, the driver explained he was looking at travel directions, and wasn’t paying attention to the road in front of him.

Last year, Chinese media remarked that of the 42 height restriction signs on Zhengzhou’s third ring road, 42 have been crashed into, while one particular height restriction sign had been crashed into 11 times within an eight day period. Chinese reports noted that Zhengzhou’s height clearance for vehicles traveling on its roads is three meters, and not the four meters that is the national standard.

Double decker tour buses have had a particularly bad run of accidents in Zhengzhou. Last April, eight passengers were hurt in a similar collision. The driver of the incident blamed rainy conditions that caused the vehicle’s windshield to fog up (shown below).

Another person was killed in October, 2014 after a double decker tour bus tore through a three-meter height restriction road sign (seen below). The accident took place on the interior of the ring road of the commercial district. At the time of the collision, the driver was said to be looking at a navigation device.

There have also been an number if accidents outside of Zhengzhou.

In January 2015, two passengers were killed when a tour bus collided with a height restriction sign in Tianjin (see below). Photos from the incident show a height restriction sign made out of welded steel girders shredding the upper level of the bus. A month later, two people were killed when a double decker tour bus slammed into an overhead sign in Zhongshan, Guangdong

In February 2014, 14 passengers were injured when a bus departing Kunming slammed into a height restriction sign. And then in February 2013, three people were injured when an overnight sleeper bus from Hubei to Zhejiang collided with a height restriction sign.

Terrifying footage from a dash cam shows a white sports car in Xiamen, Fujian being covered in 50 tons of gravel, after the vehicle struck a fully-loaded dump truck, knocking it on its side. Both the driver and passenger were killed in the crash.

The 24 year-old victims, an engaged coupled named Wu and Pu, were pronounced dead at the scene. A number of bystanders attempted to dig them out from under the rubble, but couldn’t get to the couple. It took emergency response workers almost two and a half hours to recover the bodies.

The force of the overturned load of gravel was so heavy that the frame of the white sports car buckled under the weight, crushing it.

As the video shows, the intersection where the crash took place does not appear to have traffic lights installed in either direction. It appears from the video that the driver did not see the dump truck at all as the passenger repeatedly yelled, “Be careful!” while the dump truck can be heard honking.

According to an eyewitness named Liu, the sports car was preparing to make a left-hand turn at the same time the dump truck entered the intersection.

The driver of the truck has been taken into custody by the police for further investigation.

Here’s the video:

Although traffic jams in China are nothing new, they’re typically caused by vehicles. Not so last week in Xi’an, Shaanxi, when it was an airplane that held up traffic for over an hour.

The plane, which was being towed through the streets of Xi’an, hit a bit of a snag when the driver had some trouble crossing four lanes of traffic on a two-way road. With plenty of assistance, it look over an hour before the driver towing the 30 meter-long cabin was finally able to navigate the turn, all the while blocking the entire road.

And in case you were wondering why a 30 meter-long airplane cabin was cruising around downtown Xi’an, according to an unidentified company, it is to be used as a training facility for flight attendants.

A rather unusual four-car collision in Chengdu, Sichuan is attracting a great deal of attention among Chinese netizens.

Seemingly defying the physics of car crashes, each vehicle at the accident site on Yizhou Boulevard formed a perfect half-circle, which the Chinese News Network described as a chrysanthemum.   The odd descriptor led one commentator to ask, “Why is this (accident) described as a “chrysanthemum”?

Fair question. Although pretty, “chrysanthemum” is a widely-used euphhemism in China for “anus”. Netizens however had another theory, and took to the interwebs asking “How much money did Huawei spend? Just look at this advertisement…“. Another said bluntly, “They crashed into the form of a Huawei logo.
