Two Chinese tourists visiting the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia have been arrested by local police after they were spotted urinating in public. New South Wales Police have confirmed that the two men were caught committing the indecent act at the popular tourist attraction last Saturday afternoon.

The two men, aged 41 and 66, attempted to leave when police approached them. Following an altercation, the men were taken into police custody.

The 41 year-old man was issued a criminal infringement notice (CIN) for offensive behavior, which typically accompanies a fine of $200 Australian dollars.

The 66 year-old man was charged with offensive behavior and resisting arrest, and has been summoned to Downing Center Local Court on December 12.

This latest incident of tourist misbehavior follows last month’s story of a Chinese tourist who was forced to return a stolen toilet seat to a Japanese hotel, which ended up costing the tourist his job. With a travel blacklist already in place, the topic of misbehaving tourists has long been familiar to Chinese people, many of whom took the opportunity to denounce the two men.

One person wrote online, “I recommend from today forward that these two not be allowed to exit the country; have their passports blacklisted, and forbid them from leaving their homes,” while another said, “At this point, education is too late of an option for them; they can only be disciplined.”

Citing a commonly used excuse, one netizen jokingly said, “But they are still just children!” Another wrote, “66 years old and he still doesn’t know how to act like a proper person, it’s obvious this is a Red Guard who has gotten older.”

Australia has become a top destination for China’s rich, while the popularity of a remote salt lake on Chinese social media has single-handedly saved a small Australian town through Chinese tourism. In turn, Australian authorities have attempted to help facilitate the rush of Chinese tourists by publishing a handbook for them.

And while it might not have received much airtime, a CCTV television commercial attempted to school Chinese tourists on proper behavior while visiting Australia through a strange commercial where Chinese are depicted as over-sized panda mascots.

Japan has been encouraging Chinese tourists to visit by offering multi-entry visas of up to ten years, but their guests haven’t always been so cooperative. The latest scandal happened at a 1,200 year-old Buddhist temple in Kyoto where a mainland Chinese tourist was seen flagrantly breaking the temple’s rules even though other Chinese tourists had respectfully complied.

A person at the shrine said he saw a man speaking Mandarin bypass a line-up of people waiting to drink from a sacred waterfall, which is said to contain the ability to grant wishes. The unidentified man simply waded into the sacred pool below the Otowa-no-taki Waterfall instead of waiting for his turn.

Normal shrine rules ask visitors to use long-handed ladles as a way to collect water from the waterfalls. Tradition says each of the three streams of the waterfall represent longevity, love, and wisdom.

Visitors are not supposed to drink from all three streams, which is said to bring bad luck. The Chinese tourist that jumped into the sacred pool was photographed using an empty bottle to collect water from each of the three streams.

First built in 778 AD, the Kiyomizu shrine is a designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Chinese tourists had last caused a commotion during the this year’s cherry tree blossom festival when a disgruntled news personality suggested visitors from China be confined to a specific area in order to limit damage to area trees.

After swarming a Thai buffet in a viral video last week, Chinese tourists have been caught swarming a fruit platter at a buffet restaurant in Vietnam.

The 20 second video, which quickly went viral after being reported by Chinese media, shows a crowd of Chinese tourists surrounding a Vietnamese waitress (seen wearing blue) carrying a platter of lychee fruit. Before she can open the bag to serve them, she’s surrounded by tourists with their arms out. Some diners go so far as to reach over her shoulder and into the bag.

Visibly agitated, the waitress dumps the platter onto a serving platform and gets out of the way. In a frenzy that lasts about seven seconds, the platter is ransacked, with nothing left behind.

Much like the incident in Thailand, Chinese netizens were largely critical of their fellow citizens’ behavior: “It’s like looking at a bunch of starving people” and “Made me think there is a famine going on“.

A video publicly shaming Chinese tourists at a buffet in Thailand went viral over the weekend.

The 32-second video shows a crowd of Chinese tourists at a buffet table of fried shrimp. The tourists can be seen grabbing as much shrimp as they can with no concern for their fellow diners. Rather than using serving utensils, the tourists used plates to shovel up the food. One woman can be seen hauling away three plates of shrimp, stacked one upon the other.

The video attracted 6,000 comments and 1,600 forwards on Weibo, eventually becoming the sixth-most searched item over the weekend. Many Chinese netizens expressed disgust, while others argued Chinese should be more conscious of how they behave while traveling abroad. A number of netizens simply criticized the tourists for wasting so much food.

One Chinese netizen wrote, “After watching this, my heart is full of anguish… I feel this is funny and yet sad at the same time.

The video quickly went viral outside of China as well. The story was all over Facebook and was the number one-rated post on reddit over the weekend. Among the 10,000 comments, some reddit users attributed the crassness of the tourists to the Cultural Revolution, the rise of new money (tuhao), and the inability to be shamed.

The Beijing Youth Report confirmed the video was taken at a Ramayana Restaurant, a buffet and tax-free store-located in Thailand. Three unnamed employees also confirmed the video was taken at the restaurant, but claim the footage was shot one to two years ago.

Other pictures found online that purportedly show Chinese tourists hoarding plates of fried shrimp at the restaurant weren’t able to be verified by the paper (seen above and below).

One Chinese tourist, Yang Mingna, (a pseudonym) described her trip to the Ramayana with a Chinese tour group as “the best place to eat on the (Thai) trip”. However, that didn’t mean it didn’t have its drawbacks:

Upon arriving, we saw that the buffet was crammed full of people. The food tables were especially busy with people, but were lacking in utensils for serving food. As many (Chinese) tourists were there, the restaurant was beyond its capacity (to serve customers). To put it simply, the provided food wasn’t enough for the requirements of so many tourists.

Another tourist named Mr Li told a similar story. When Li visited the Ramayana in December 2014 he complained of the lack of food, saying “There was just a bit of soup and vegetables left, and some fried rice left in the corners of the pan. Everything was cold.” Li also claimed there was a shortage of serving utensils, compelling the tourists to use their plates to shovel up the food.

Tour guide Zhang Tongchen however argues the video has been blown way out of proportion. Zhang is adamant that such behavior is “exaggerated” and not the way Chinese tourists normally act:

Normally it’s really not that serious. The tourists in this video are displaying uncivil behavior. But for all the tour groups I’ve led, this type of behavior is uncommon.

Having taken many tour groups to the restaurant in the video, Zhang emphasized the importance of the fried shrimp at the Ramayana, explaining that diners go into a frenzy over them. Zhang also claims that beyond shrimp, the restaurant’s menu doesn’t have much to offer.

Li confirmed Zhang’s account of the shrimp frenzy: “When the shrimp appeared, everyone went after them, and after a short while there was nothing left.

Zhang also argued that Chinese tourists may be eating in a rush to leave enough time to shop at the duty-free store located adjacent to the restaurant.

Although restaurant employees were unwilling to say which particular Ramayana restaurant the video was taken at, they did say that buffet prices aren’t set because they are determined by Chinese tour companies.

Public defecation is a straight-up fact of life in mainland China. It’s something you’ll see on roads, public places, subways, airplanes, and even elevators. It’s not common in the USA (yet), but it might be soon.

Monterey Park, California, is a Taiwanese community that has seen a number of arrivals from Mainland China recently. They argue that the new immigrants are changing the face of the community. This was encapsulated last Tuesday, when a local resident Mrs Fang and her husband suddenly spotted a middle-aged Asian woman with her pants down, squatting and defecating on someone’s lawn without any regard for public decency. There’s no confirmation the woman is from Mainland China, but the community is speculating about her origin based on her behavior.

Fang told her husband to turn the car around for a second look, and her suspicions were confirmed. The woman, wiping up, unblinkingly stared back at the disbelieving Fang, nonplussed and shameless about her behavior. As Fang took photographs, the woman continued with her business, only pausing to turn her head away from the camera.

After wiping herself clean, she tossed the tissues on the ground, pulled up her pants, and then disappeared down the street.

Sylvia, who lives at the property, said she noticed the feces the next day when she went to walk her dog. She saw the used toilet paper and wondered if dog owners were starting to wipe their dogs after defecating.

She took it upon herself to clean up the mess, saying she didn’t want it to “affect other people”.

The website that broke this story, Chinese in LA, described the incident as being  “extremely embarrassing for the image of Chinese people”, and reminded all residents of the Los Angeles suburb to maintain public decency.

Monterey Park mayor Peter Chan said the incident hurt the city’s image, and may impact whether others decide to move there in the future.

expat assaults bus driver chengduA bus driver in Chengdu is outraged after a belligerent foreigner grabbed his steering wheel and started pressing buttons after missing his bus top, putting himself and other passengers in danger.

Yang Tao, a bus driver with Chengdu Dongxin Public Buses, says he was shocked by the man’s behavour. “He has no sense of safety awareness at all,” he said.

The incident happened last Friday (August 22) after a foreigner boarded his bus. Yang describes the passenger as around 30 years old, slim, and with blond hair. “A classic European-American look,” Yang said.

The first sign of trouble happened the second the foreigner boarded. He only paid 2 mao rather than the 2 yuan fare, and then pretended not to understand Putonghua when the driver protested.  “If he pretends not to understand me, then there’s nothing I can do,” Yang said. “The only thing left to do is to continue with the bus route.”

Yang said everything was fine until the foreigner came to the front because he missed his stop. The passenger wanted Yang to pull over and let him off. “I need to take care of the entire bus, so I rejected his request.” Instead, Yang tried using English by saying “Next.”

Unfortunately, the foreigner didn’t take it well. “I need to get off, and if you don’t allow me to get off then you are wrong!” he said.

The foreigner came over to the driver’s position, and started randomly pushing buttons on the dashboard in order to open the bus doors. Then he then tried to wrestle control of the steering wheel away from Yang while the bus was moving.

That wasn’t all: after finally reaching the next stop, the foreigner gave the bus driver a parting shot to the head. Yang was, to put it mildly, not impressed:

He was very impolite, and without any safety awareness at all. In the end, he hit me on the head. Even though his head strike did not cause any pain, he was still very insulting.

Yang said people from developed countries should have a better awareness of safety.

Chengdu may have a problem with foreigners behaving badly on public transit; another visitor was caught behaving poorly in this video.

From a previous incident that occurred in 2013.

When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go.

That was the case for one toddler on board a Beijing to Detroit Delta Airlines flight. The kid urgently had to go to the bathroom — so urgently, in fact, there was no time to go to the lavatory on board. So the kid’s father laid a newspaper down in the isle and the child squat and pinched.

Other passengers requested the child’s parents to take the child to the bathroom. However, the child’s grandfather, who was also on the flight, persisted in having the child make full use of the newspaper. Airline staff were unable to stop the airborne bodily evacuation from happening.

Fellow passenger Mr Wang from Oregon said the family made all Chinese people lose face, reports the World Journal.

Almost two weeks after a man was caught answering nature’s call at Laojie MTR station in Shenzhen, another man riding on the Shenzhen Metro was filmed relieving himself inside a Line 5 subway carriage around midnight on May 27.

The man in red relieves himself inside a metro carriage

The 13-second video uploaded to Youku (now encrypted) was filmed by Mr Fan, a teacher at Shenzhen Tsinghua Middle School, who unfortunately witnessed the entire scene. Around 11pm, a man that appeared to be drunk and wearing a red T-shirt, a pair of black pants and a backpack, teetered and waddled to the last carriage of the train. To Mr Fan’s surprise, the guy did not find a seat and sit down in the empty carriage. Instead, he was seen standing close to the carriage’s door and going through the rituals that all guys are familiar with when nature calls.

This is however, not the first time ill-mannered commuters have been seen peeing or pooping on a metro station. In 2013, a high school student was seen sitting with his pants off on top of a trash can and pooping in the Guangzhou Metro.

Guangzhou recently introduced a bathroom-locator app for passengers who need to use public toilets. Perhaps, Shenzhen should consider introducing one too, the sooner the better. No one wants to read the next tragic headline: Man’s private parts caught by the metro door while peeing.

Shenzhen government proposes punishing “uncivilized” behaviour https://thenanfang.com/shenzhen-government-proposes-punishing-uncivilized-behaviour/ https://thenanfang.com/shenzhen-government-proposes-punishing-uncivilized-behaviour/#respond Tue, 03 Jul 2012 23:00:30 +0000 http://www.thenanfang.com/blog/?p=7148 The Shenzhen government is organizing a poll to identify 49 types of uncivilized behaviour that will be punished.

Despite China’s 5,000 years of civilization, authorities in Shenzhen have decided that the public need yet more civilizing, according to local television. On June 1, members of the city’s Standing Committee met to discuss introducing punishments for 49 types of uncivilized behaviour, such as spitting, littering and smoking in public places.

Until July 6, citizens will be invited to give suggestions about what types of behaviour should be punished, and what appropriate punishments would be, Chinese-language media have reported.

The measures may be introduced throughout the country, and as always, Shenzhen is the guinea pig. There will be three polls before any laws are introduced. The first, which ends June 6, is aimed at receiving suggestions about which types of behaviour should be targeted, such as improper disposal of chewing gum, and throwing litter from vehicles or buildings. Forty-nine is the magic number, so there is plenty of room for people to have their pet peeves tackled.

Those of us who have a lot of experience in China know that tackling uncivilized behaviour here is a herculean task. On July 1, a man in Shandong Province embarrassed his fellow bus passengers when he castigated a migrant worker for smelling bad. Subways are also host to all kinds of inappropriate behaviour.

After last year’s earthquake in Japan, many Chinese observed the civility of the Japanese people and asked themselves why Chinese could not be that way.

So, which ill-mannered things would you want put a stop to?
