The floor of a Shanghai subway car on Metro Line 2 was more than satisfactory for one man who made a very public display of doing his business.

An unidentified man wearing a blue shirt and red armband, a uniform associated with a security guard, was seen making himself at home on the subway, defecating onto a strategically placed newspaper.subway poop

As photos uploaded to the internet show, after he was done, the man turned his back to a carriage packed full of commuters and waived his buttocks high in the air, as if to attract more attention.

As NetEase pointed out, every station along Shanghai Metro Line 2 is equipped with a public bathroom, and all stations are located between two and three minutes away from each other.

Social quickly condemned the man’s poor show of manners. One person said, “Couldn’t you have waited until the next station, exited, and used the bathroom there?” Another tried to apply reason to the situation, “If it was diarrhea, then it would be more dignified to do it in your pants where it could be concealed better. Then, when the doors are open, you could rush out and no one could see your face clearly.”subway poop

Where other subway commuters might have hurriedly left the subway, Shanghai commuters showed their mettle by refusing to give up their seats out of indifference or apathy.

But as we look back on 2016, we see that subway commuters around China put up with instances of public defecation with regular aplomb.

Last month a child pooped on the Changha Metro Line 2:subway poop

In April, commuters sat in close proximity to the gift left by another child on the Beijing Metro Line 1, near Sihui Station:

In February, an eight year-old boy heeded the call on the Guangzhou Metro with both his parents present:

subway poop

And in January, the newly opened Nanchang Metro Line 1 was christened with this public defecation:

Instances of public defecation on the subway have been rife in the PRD. They include: on the platform, in an elevator, and in a trash can.

Beijing’s oldest subway line, Metro Line 1, will finally have subway platform safety barriers after years of accidents and suicides. Installation of the safety barriers will be complete by the end of 2017.

The installation is in line with 2014’s announcement that the barriers would be in place by the end of next year.

Line 1 has served as the main artery of Beijing’s public transportation system for over 30 years, and is one of the busiest in the City. However, along with Line 2, safety barriers were never installed on its subway platforms.

Lines 1 and 2 saw a number of commuters falling or jumping off subway platforms to the tracks below, such as an incident in February 2015 that shut down subway traffic for an hour.

A spate of incidents in the first half of 2014 prompted Beijing residents to demand safety barriers as a necessary method of protecting commuters, who regularly flood the subway in huge numbers during rush hour.

Safety barriers were routinely installed at subway stations on Beijing’s 18 newer subway lines.

Notwithstanding, safety doors have also been responsible for taking lives instead of protecting them.

In November 2014, a 33 year-old woman was killed when she was trapped by a pair of safety doors at a Line 5 station. The incident revealed that the automated safety doors were not equipped with sensors that could detect a nearby person.

Since the ruling, a number of Chinese have vented outrage at foreign entities online, with some people seen smashing their iPhones in anger. Although the USA was not directly involved in Monday’s ruling, it is often perceived to be in opposition to China’s international disputes.

In 2012, during another territorial dispute, protests against Japan turned violent in a number of cities as Chinese protesters overturned and destroyed Japanese-made cars, including one that was used by Chinese police.

Sinkholes have again appeared in a southern Chinese city, this time on a Guangzhou street when a passing cement truck suddenly collapsed into a hole directly beneath it, throwing local traffic into chaos.

The ten square meter-wide sinkhole appeared on Saturday night in the Huadu District of Guangzhou. The massive hole had a diameter of ten meters and was 1.5 meters deep, occupying three lanes of traffic.

The hole neatly accommodated the cement truck, tipping it onto its right side.

There were no injuries reported.

A day afterwards, the truck had been removed and the sinkhole filled in with concrete (shown below). With the area still cordoned off, only one lane of the road was open to traffic.

No official reason has been given for the road collapse, although local residents suspect it may be related to construction of the city’s subway tunnels.

Sinkholes have been opening up in Guangzhou at an alarmingly common rate.

On June 14th, a sinkhole appeared in Huangpu District. Although the reason for the sinkhole hasn’t been made clear, the hole appeared directly underneath a car (seen above), similar to how the street collapsed underneath the cement truck in the most recent case. A similar case also occurred in June of last year when a Guangzhou road broke underneath the weight of a passing public bus.

Sinkholes also appeared in Guangzhou last year in the city’s Baiyun and Liwan districts. Huadu had previously experienced a sinkhole in 2014.

As packed as the train appears to be, the diners somehow found room to set-up a dinner tray complete with bowls, cutlery and even a jug of water. If that wasn’t enough, the diners went so far as to hang their wet clothing above them while they dined.guangzhou metro dinnerEating on the subway, be it a snack or a square meal, is not permitted on the Guangzhou metro. The men claimed they were not aware of the rule, and were eventually kicked off the train by subway workers at Higher Education Mega Center South Station. It’s unclear where the men were headed, but presumably it was not home for dinner.

A sad fact in the bustling urban centers of China is that rates of sexual harassment towards women on subways is so high that cities like Guangzhou and Beijing have long considered establishing “women-only” cars. And with more and more stories of molestations happening in public, a city in Henan Province has taken the first step towards protecting women.

Each day during the morning and evening rush, a single public bus exclusively for women passengers is dispatched on the #906 bus in Zhengzhou. Decorated with stuffed animals and specifically marked with signs, the bus only makes the rounds during the summer season when women are prone to wearing fewer clothes.

female only bus

Women passengers on the bus were delighted with the exclusive use of the bus. “I think it is very good, very new,” said one female passenger.

However, not everyone is happy with the city’s efforts to protect the fairer sex. As recorded by a news crew riding the women-only bus, one elderly man was seen getting into an argument with the bus driver, angrily complaining that “this is discrimination towards men.”

The old man held up the bus as he vented his frustrations. “This is a public bus, what are you talking about?” the old man said. “I don’t understand, what ‘next step’ are you talking about? Don’t you know this is discriminatory towards men?”

Other men were seen to be more accommodating when told they weren’t allowed on the bus.

The reason for “women-only” buses seems to be lost on some people, even upon one of its female passengers who remarked, “they should make a ‘man-only’ bus too; it’s only fair.”

A dispute at a Hangzhou subway station took an ugly turn when a woman deliberately knocked over a couple’s baby stroller, with their baby still in it, in retaliation for accidentally knocking her iPad to the ground.

The unidentified couple were traveling through Ding’an Station on the city’s Metro Line 1 when they bumped into a woman named Hu on the escalator. As a result, Hu dropped her iPad.

The ensuing argument turned into a shoving match, prompting the involvement of the subway station employees. In the video, a subway station worker can be seen pushing the baby stroller away from the argument. Hu, clearly taking offence, proceeded to walk around the man and knock over the baby carriage before anyone could stop her.

In the resulting melee, the male partner of the couple can be seen striking Hu. Hu attempted to justify her short temper on a cesarean section she had three month ago, which she claims has left her feeling “irritable”.

The baby and Hu were all taken to hospital. No injuries were reported.

Public concern about the safety of escalators in China is so high that signs reassuring citizens of their safety are not uncommon. As a result, video surveillance of escalator accidents is rarely published by Chinese media. However, a recent escalator incident at Dongmenkou subway station in Nigbo was not only captured on video it was actually reported by the majority of Chinese press.

During a busy rush hour on February 18, a queue of people were suddenly flung off an ascending escalator after it malfunctioned and suddenly reversed. People tumbled down the escalator, and landed in a massive heap of bodies at the bottom.

ningbo subway escalator reverse

Panic turned to confusion as eyewitnesses reported other commuters continued to use the malfunctioning escalator, which was not stopped and/or cordoned off after the accident. Oddly, the official Weibo account for the Ningbo Metro Transportation Operations announced that there had not been an escalator incident. Instead, it posted that all of the escalators at Dongmenkou station were “operating normally.”

ningbo subway escalator reverse

It turns out that the Ningbo Metro was factually accurate in announcing that there had not been an accident at its Dongmenkou Station. The incident occurred in a tunnel leading to a nearby mall, so the escalator did not fall under the jurisdiction and responsibility of the Ningbo Metro. The name of the mall was not identified.

Although Chinese media reported that only five people sustained minor injuries from the accident, over ten people were taken to No. 113 People’s Liberation Army Hospital for medical treatment. Of those, five were admitted, all women between the ages of 20 and 40. Alhough most victims suffered minor injuries, one 31 year-old woman tore her knee.

Whether in anticipation of the future Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei megacity, or trying to stay one step ahead of its southern rival, Shanghai, Beijing has ambitious plans for the city’s subway system. This year, the city plans to unveil an unprecedented 15 new subway lines. While some of the 15 are actually extensions to existing lines, the expansion will result in a total of 334 stations over 18 lines, measuring 554 kilometers in length.

To help explain the expansion, we’ve created a breakdown. Firstly, we’ll look at two lines which only recently opened.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 14

Initially opening last summer, the second stage of Line 14 will extend south from Jintailu Station at Line 6, and connect with Shilihe Station on Line 10. The line will then head westward towards Beijing South Railway Station on Line 4. When the two sections are complete, a trip from Wangjing Station to Beijing South Railway will take just 45 minutes. However, there will still be no transfer point with the Airport Express Line.

beijing new lines 2016

Changping Line, Stage Two

The second stage of the Changping Line in the northwestern area of the city will add an additional six stations to the existing line that already connects with Line 8 and Line 13. The line will extend west, and include a stop at the Ming Tombs.

beijing new lines 2016

Western Suburb Line (Xijiao Line)

The Western Suburb Line will begin at Bagou Station on Line 10 (in the northwest) and serve as a feeder line towards suburbs to the west, making a stop at Fragrant Hill Park.

beijing new lines 2016

S1 Maglev Line

In the making since 2011, the Maglev line will start at Pingguoyuan Station on Line 1, and make its way south-west. Trains on the line are expected to handle as many as 1,032 passengers at once.

beijing new lines 2016

Yanfang Line

The Yanfang Line will be Beijing Metro’s first “unmanned subway”. Trains on the Yanfang Line are expected to reach 80 kilometers per hour and take 1,262 passengers at once.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 3, Stage One

Line 3 was neglected due to planning for Line 6, which took over Nanluoguxiang and Dongsi stations, both of which were originally planned for Line 3. Now that Line 6 is just about done, Line 3 is stepping out. The line will start its route at Dongsi Shitiao Station on Line 2. Heading north-east, the line will serve the eastern suburbs of Beijing, and will pass through Tuanjiehu Station, near the expat hotspot of Sanlitun.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 17

This north-south line will relieve pressure on Line 5. Line 17 will have a total of ten transfer stations, including Yong’anli Station on Line 1, Dongdaqiao Station on Line 6, and Taiyanggong Station on Line 10.

beijing new lines 2016Airport Express for “Beijing New Airport” (South)

Although Beijing’s new airport doesn’t open until 2019, a new express line is expected to be unveiled soon that will connect the “Beijing New Airport” with the central subway network. The express line will serve the airport’s two terminals and then end in a transfer point at Caoqiao Station on Line 10 to the south of the city.

The 80 billion yuan investment will be located 46 kilometers away from Tian’anmen Square, and combined with the existing Beijing Airport, will serve 150 million passengers a year.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 8, Stage 3

This north-south line will also relieve pressure on Line 5. Stage 3 of Line 8 will start at Wangfujing Station on Line 1, head south to Qianmen Station on Line 2, then Dahongmen Station on Line 10, and then further to the south and east.

When complete, lucky Line 8 will serve as the central north-south axis of the Beijing Metro, similar to the way Line 1 is the central east-west axis for the network.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 12

This ambitious line will be 29 kilometers long and, with Line 13, will have the most transfer stations of any subway line. Line 12 will alleviate pressure on Line 2 and Line 10, running east-west just to the north of Line 2. It will make stops at Renmin University on Line 4, Dazhongsi Station on the west side of Line 13,  Anhuaqiao Station on Line 8, Heping Xiqiao Station on Line 5, Guangximen Station on the east side of Line 13, and also Sanyuanqiao Station on Line 10 and the Airport Express.

beijing new lines 2016

Fangshan Line, North Extension

Already in place, and serving as an extension to Line 9, the new Fangshan Line extension will continue four stations north of Guogongzhuang Station.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 19

Line 19 will start at Xingong Station on Line 4 to the south of the city, and then head up through Caoqiao Station on Line 10, Ping’anli Station on Line 4 and 6, and Jishuitan Station on Line 2 before continuing further to the north.

Line 19 is said to eventually be the fastest line in the city, reaching speeds in excess of 100 kilometer per hour.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 7, East Extension

With Line 7 currently operating just to the south of Line 2, this east-west line will open an extension to the east, continuing outward from the current terminal, Jiaohuachang Station.

beijing new lines 2016

Airport Express, Dongzhimen Extension

Beijing’s existing Airport Express will get an extension that will head westward from Dongzhimen Station towards Beixinqiao Station on Line 5.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 16

This north-south line will connect with the National Library Station on Lines 9 and 4, Muxidi Station on Line 1, and Daguanying Station on Line 7 before traveling to the western reaches of the city.

beijing new lines 2016

Line 6, Western Extension

Line 6 will continue to stretch east and west connecting to Pingguoyuan Station on Line 1. However, the extension will not connect with the rest of Line 6 at Haidianwuluju Station.

beijing new lines 2016

Pinggu Line

At 70 km long, the Pinggu Line is a completely above-ground subway, modeled on train lines used in the Pearl River Delta. Trains on the Pingu Line should reach speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. Starting from Dongfeng Beiqiao Station on Line 14 in the city’s east, this suburban line will extend eastward before looping towards the north.

From the end of the line in the east, a commuter should be able to reach the center of downtown Beijing within one hour.

If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, then as the saying goes, it’s a duck. And ducks don’t belong on the subway.

An unidentified woman in her 20s was barred from entering Dongke Station in Chengdu yesterday morning, and the reason was right under her nose.

The woman was carrying a live duck in her purse. According to Chengdu municipal regulations, live animals aren’t allowed on city subways. But since there aren’t any regulations against dead animals, the woman quickly made a cutthroat decision.

Reports say the woman borrowed a knife from an unknown source, and, upon finding a quiet corner, removed the duck from her purse. Then, she proceeded to slaughter the duck on the floor of the subway station. She used newspapers to soak up the pools of blood.

Station staff say they didn’t find out about the incident in time, and so were unable to stop her.
