The 17 year-old Zhuhai student was moving her belongings to her school dormitory when she decided to go shopping at Yangming Plaza last Friday. When lugging around her suitcase became a hassle, she decided to leave it in a quiet corner near a mall bathroom.

As the girl was wary of leaving her belongings behind, she wrote a note to discourage thieves: “Please don’t move; there is a bomb (in this luggage); thank you for your assistance.”

Perhaps realizing the magnitude of her threat, the middle phrase regarding the “bomb” was written smaller than the other words so as only becoming clear to anyone who paid attention.

And, they did. About an hour after the girl went off shopping, the suitcase was discovered, prompting the mall to be evacuated. The local bomb squad was called in to inspect the suitcase, only to find it was full of women’s clothes and toiletries.

 Local police have pressed charges against the girl for disrupting the peace.

The Pentagon World Trade and Commerce Mall was originally built to attract tourists; but, it was largely ignored because of its remote location and confusing interior layout.

The structure has the dubious distinction of being China’s largest vacant building, at 500,000 square meters. As each side of the Chinese Pentagon measures 320 meters long, it is even larger than the original.

The shopping mall currently has only one tenant, an importing business that operates out of the northeast corner of the five-sided structure. The building’s owner has been trying to increase interest from prospective tenants.

The landlord may have some help because 2016 will see the opening of its new neighbor, the Shanghai Disney Resort, when it opens on June 16.

Between Disney,  the fake louvre, and the fake Tian’anmen Square, it appears Shanghai visitors can go from one magical kingdom to another in the same day.

At 108 meters tall and requiring about 25 minutes to complete a rotation, the ferris wheel offers a view of the Oriental Pearl Tower on clear days.

Some of the statutes are on the steps of Cheung Sha Wan Plaza near Li Chi Kok MTR Station, but Hong Kongers mostly walk past without giving them much thought. However, some mainlanders are incensed that a symbol of China’s military might is saluting people of Hong Hong.

As translated by the Hong Kong Free Press, here some of the leading comments:

“This is blasphemy against the military,” the top comment on China’s Sina News rails. “[This] must be removed,” followed the close second, “it’s disrespectful to the People’s Liberation Army. This business’s acts must be severely condemned.”

“Hong Kong,” the third-top comment grumbled, “nothing good has ever come out of that **** place.”

While not everyone feels this is something to get upset over, at least one netizen suggests that the source of the anger of mainlanders has to do with a lack of privilege. One person wrote, “This should not allowed… Here on the mainland, do you see anyone dare do something like this?”

And before we forget, these preparations are made for the National Day holidays. Even though mainland visitors are way down since the parallel trading protests from earlier this year, this is always the time of year when scores of mainland shoppers cross the border in order to take advantage of huge sales around Hong Kong.

Deadly, dysfunctional escalators have again captured national attention in China again after a freak accident killed a mother at a Hubei shopping mall in eastern China.

A surveillance video captures the horrifying incident in which the mother is seen disappearing into an unsecured floor panel at the top an escalator at the Annian shopping mall in Jingzhou.

The victim, 30 year-old Xiang Liujuan, was accompanying her son from the sixth to seventh floor. Xiang’s son also nearly fell inside the escalator, but was heroically thrown by Xiang into the grasp of department store greeters that can be seen waiting on the seventh floor.

As seen from the video (below), no attempt was made to activate the “emergency stop” button on the escalator by the two greeters or a maintenance staff worker that was present at the time of the incident. All three workers walked away in confusion after Xiang disappeared inside the escalator.

Rescue efforts to reach Xiang took four hours by firefighters and maintenance workers, who cut out part of the escalator to extract her. During this time, a Weibo user that was identified as Xiang’s sister-in-law kept posting messages praying that Xiang would be safely rescued.

Preliminary reports suggest a misplaced screw during repairs made the day before caused the floor panel to give way.

And then yesterday, another escalator mishap was reported in the news.

The arm of a one year-old child got caught inside an escalator mechanism at the Sun Mall in Wuzhou, Guangxi. He had to have his arm amputated at the elbow to be freed.

Escalator accidents have commonly occurred in China, resulting in injuries and sometimes death.

The most serious case happened in July 2011 when a 13 year-old teenager died and 40 people were injured when an escalator headed to the upper floor of the Beijing Zoo Station of the Beijing Metro suddenly slammed into reverse, causing a pile-up of bodies to form at the bottom.

In 2010, 24 people were injured when an escalator at the Guomao Station of the Shenzhen Metro suddenly began going in reverse. The next year, days after the Beijing Metro tragedy, another escalator accident injured four people at the Shenzhen Metro’s Qinghu Station when eyewitnesses said it began moving backwards. Also in 2011, three people were injured in a mysterious incident involving an escalator at the Xiamen Railway BRT Station.

In 2012, a nine year-old boy died instantly when he stuck his head out from a moving escalator in a Beijing shopping mall. In 2013, eight students were injured while taking an escalator at an amusement center in Shenzhen, four of whom were in serious condition.

Last year, a malfunctioning escalator at the Guangzhou East Railway Station suddenly sped up, sending 11 people to the hospital. Also in 2014, a woman pushing a baby stroller caused an escalator to malfunction at the busy People’s Square Station on the Shanghai Metro, leading to ten injured people.

Just last month, an unaccompanied child playing with an escalator fell from the second floor of a Guangxi shopping mall.

There are currently 103 spiral escalators in the world, all of which were made by Mitsubishi Electric. The Daimaru Department Store marks the company’s largest order since it began manufacturing spiral escalators in 1985.

In case you were curious about the mechanics of how a spiral escalator works, it’s actually quite complicated. Mitsubishi Electric “explains”:

Horizontal speed decreases as it moves along the slope, making circular designs impractical. Mitsubishi Electric’s engineers overcame this dilemma by inventing the Center Shift Method, shifting the center of the circle around which the escalator rotates in response to the degree of gradient, realizing smooth rotational movement in perfect harmony with vertical movement.

A shopping mall in Yan’an, Shaanxi is the scene of horrific crime today as a dispute between shopkeepers turned deadly when three people were attacked by a man with a knife.

The attack happened at around 1pm on the third floor of the Shengda International Shopping Plaza. At least two of the victims had a shop selling curtains on the floor, and were apparently in a dispute with the man accused of the attack. One of the victims was so badly cut that his head was severed.  A third victim was found on an escalator nearby. There are conflicting reports, but at least two of the three died in the incident.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, which has been sealed off by police tape.

At the Golden Sand Bay Shopping Mall in Shilong District, a woman wearing an orange shirt was seen systematically taking apart a Bank of Dongguan bank machine. Even as mall security showed up, the woman was undeterred and kept deconstructing the money dispenser until it was an indistinguishable pile of parts in the mall.

Called a “female hero without peer”, the woman is now in police custody. Despite all that effort, it’s not clear if she was able to get her bank card back.

The boldly colored pink parking spots read: “Parking for the exclusive use of Women”. The spots are wider to make parking easier, and are located closer to the mall entrance for convenience.

This isn’t the first time women-only parking spaces have shown-up in a mall parking lot. The spaces also exist at a shopping mall in Dalian. Yet when accused of discrimination, the Chongqing mall manager, Yang Xiangdong, said: “The main position of this mall is to provide service to women.”

Putting gender equality aside for a moment, the women-only spots clearly make good business sense. With women comprising the majority of Chongqing’s mall traffic, Yang’s simply catering to the mall’s most important demographic.

However, as a number of astute commentators have pointed out, the ten pink parking spots are mostly occupied by luxury cars. The shopping mall isn’t just catering to women, it’s catering to rich women.

At around 8:45 pm Thursday night, eyewitnesses say a man jumped to his death after crossing the safety railing on the top floor of the shopping center, also known as Tee Mall.

Emergency services were called, but the man reportedly died at the scene.

While the area where the man died was cordoned off by police, shops in the mall remained open. The identity of the victim has not been released.
