A 24 year-old Shenzhen woman has given birth despite claiming she has never had sex.

Lin Shuping said she first realized she was pregnant when she was about to give birth. Lin gave birth to a healthy two kilogram baby girl after she fainted and was rushed to the No. 2 People’s Hospital.

Lin says she has no boyfriend, and has never been touched by a man. When asked where the baby came from, Lin said, “I don’t know.” She said her last period was in December of last year.

Lin has not yet applied for a birth certificate for her baby, and has admitted she doesn’t want the baby because she is unable to care for it.

The hospital is trying to reach Lin’s family in Pingle, Guangxi because she is unable to pay for her hospital bills. A fund has been created in her name.

A Shenzhen parent is upset that her child’s school promoted a book for her to read that was “scary”.

As part of Reading Month, the Sanlian Yongheng School in Longhua New District encouraged its students to pick out their own selections in order to develop their literacy. However, one student simply went too far. The book she selected, The Youth’s Handbook of Scientific Exploration, ended up exposing a wealth of knowledge that she wasn’t prepared for.

An unnamed parent lashed out at the school for allowing the child to read a book that contained supernatural references. “The school is a place for imparting scientific and cultural knowledge. Why are such books being promoted?” she asked.

“I didn’t think the book was anything special from its title, and didn’t think much about it at first,” the parent confessed. “However, over the past few nights, my child has been calling out in his dreams while sleeping; she said she saw the ‘boogeyman’ that was written in the book. She was so scared, she couldn’t go back to sleep.”

The book is filled with tales of the supernatural and contains story titles like “The Constant Ghost of the White Palace”, “The Haunted House of the Isle”, “The Reincarnated Youthful Girl”, and “The Photo of the Grandmother Ghost”. And as pointed out by the parent, the book contains a “terrifying” picture of a black cat with its fangs bared.

“The words in this book have a terrifying effect upon me as an adult — just think what it can do to a minor,” said the parent.

Confronted with the accusations of promoting supernatural elements through education, a representative for Sanlian Yongheng School dismissed any wrongdoing, saying that the school’s 6th graders have the ability to choose whatever they want to read by themselves.

The representative also said the school has refunded the purchase of The Youth’s Handbook of Scientific Exploration.

Shenzhen traffic Police have concocted an unusual punishment for drivers improperly using their high beams: the “green chair”.

Violators are forced to sit on the chair in front of their car and stare into their own high beams for five minutes. The logic is that by giving violators a dose of their own medicine it will encourage proper use of high beams. Violators are also fined 300 yuan, and one point is deducted from their driver’s license.

The Shenzhen traffic police have been doling out this punishment since 2014, but they are now using the green chair as a symbol of punishment and shame.

Shenzhen traffic police also used green hats last summer to shame jaywalkers.

Although Chinese netizens were mostly supportive of the headlight punishment, they believed the green hat punishment was cruel. Police dodged the accusation that they were actively trying to shame traffic violators by explaining that green was the uniform color chosen for the temporary traffic warden outfit, consisting of a hat and vest.

21st century luxury is coming to Shenzhen parking lots in the form of robot valets to park your vehicle.

Called “Geta” as in “Get a car”, the self-automated system will fetch or park your car within two minutes. Developed by Shenzhen-based Yeefung Techonology, the robot parking system is expected to be widely available by October.

Here’s how Geta works: drivers arrive at the parking garage and park their cars on an elevated rack. After exiting the vehicle, a robot will lift up the car, and deliver it to its parking space.

Because the car is being transported by the laser-guided robot, the electronic valet can move cars into cramped spaces drivers can’t access.

Yeefung CEO Marco Wu said his company’s robot parking system creates 30 to 40 percent additional parking space, something that is highly valued in Chinese parking garages. ”The parking robot is designed to increase the amount of parking space, becoming a rare thing thanks to land restrictions in China, and all over the world,” said Wu. “Our company is focusing on three-dimensional parking which requires minimal space. The robot can go everywhere without tracks, it’s free and versatile and will reform parking in the future.”

Unlike normal parking garages, Geta uses an elevator system to access different floors, thereby eliminating the need for parking ramps. “The robot is just like a human being,” explained Wu. “It uses laser navigation, scanning a reflected signal to pinpoint its location. And like our eyes, it knows where it is by recognising objects around it. The signal is then transmitted to a computer containing a map which then shows the robot where to go.”

Duesseldorf airport in Germany offered its passengers the use of robot valet parking back in July 2014. The fully-insured German robot valet parking costs  29 euros ($39.59) per day or 4 euros ($5.46) per hour.

Here’s a video to better explain how the system works.

According to an annual report published by the National Academy of Economic Strategy (NAES) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and the China Social Sciences Press and City and Competitiveness Research Centre, Shenzhen tops the list of “economically competitive” Chinese cities.

Rounding out the top ten were Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taipei, Tianjin, Beijing, Suzhou, Macao and Wuxi. The report studied a total of 294 Chinese cities; not one of the top ten cities was located in central or western China.

Being economically competitive does however have its drawbacks such as pollution, traffic congestion, and overcrowding, factors which the report refers to as “urban disease”. And while Shenzhen tops the list of economically competitive cities, it also leads the so-called urban disease list. Close behind Shenzhen are: Beijing, Hangzhou, Wenzhou, Guangzhou, Jinan, Shanghai, Xi’an, Foshan and Shijiazhuang.

Shenzhen made news last year after it toppled Hong Kong for the top position as China’s most economically competitive city. The report cited the city’s sky-high per capita GDP and low GDP energy consumption as reasons why it took first place.

Last year, the China Institute of City Competitiveness ranked Hong Kong as 12th out of China’s most competitive cities. Hong Kong’s demotion was due to its reliance on core industries, societal friction, and the ineffectual nature of local government. This was the first time the former British colony had fallen out of the list’s top ten.

Didi Kuaiche has confirmed that a suspect captured for the murder of a Shenzhen schoolteacher was a driver registered with the ride-sharing platform.

On the evening of May 3, Shenzhen police say they caught a suspect named Pan who confessed to killing 24 year-old Zhong the day before after he picked her up through the Didi Kuaiche ride sharing service.

According to Shenzhen police, Pan said he picked up Zhong at her home in Shenzhen Hi-tech Industrial Park at around 9pm on Monday. However, instead of delivering her to her primary school in Shajing, Bao’an, Pan drove Zhong to a remote road where he robbed and then murdered her.

Zhong’s body has since been recovered by police.

The day after the murder, Didi Kuaiche released a statement that said in part: “Based on preliminary verification, the victim called a car from our platform. Pan, the suspect, registered his real ID, driver’s license and car to our platform, and passed the safety check. However, he was using a fake license plate on the night he committed the crime.” The company also said there were no previous complains from Pan’s previous 18 passengers.

A Didi driver in Shenzhen, Tang Yi, told China Daily that drivers can begin working for the ride-sharing service even before their submitted personal information is verified.

Divers of online ride-sharing platforms have been in the news before. Last July, a Didi driver raped a passenger in Beijing. A month later, an Uber driver was arrested for robbing and molesting a passenger in Chengdu.

Didi Kuaiche announced that it will include a feature by which users can contact “110” police emergency services inside the app.

Shenzhen’g growing technology sector celebrated another local success story as KuangChi Science’s personal jetpack comes to market.

The Martin Jetpack, which despite a price tag of 2 million yuan ($308,640), has already sold 200 units. The vehicle is being touted as the the world’s first truly practical commercial jetpack.

The gasoline-powered aircraft can carry commercial payloads of up to 120 kilograms with a maximum flying time of 45 minutes at speeds of up to 80 km per hour. The pack can operate in close proximity to trees, buildings, and other confined spaces.

“Our buyers are from all over the world,” said Zhang Yangyang, KuangChi’s CEO. “For example, a rescue team in Dubai ordered about 30 units because the jetpack is easier to operate than helicopters in a city full of skyscrapers.”

KuangChi has also developed the “Traveler”, a near-space device that provides the benefits of a satellite at a fraction of the cost. The 40 metre in diameter, 1 ton helium-filled balloon can float to the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere and can provide WiFi services, resource mapping, traffic control, shipping communications, and aid in search and rescue operations.

Although currently based in New Zealand, Kuangchi intends to relocate to Shenzhen as part of the city’s “peacock” campaign to attract and develop more high-tech companies. Previous success stories include DJI, now the world’s leading manufacturer of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones).

The strange circumstances surrounding the death of Hilary St John Bower, a 60 year-old English teacher at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has taken a bizarre turn following the revelation that Bower had several girlfriends.

According to a Weibo post from the Shenzhen police department, a 38 year-old Hubei woman named Xu and two other suspects have been arrested for Bower’s murder. “Due to a dispute over their relationship, a 38-year-old woman surnamed Xu was unhappy with Hilary St John Bower and conspired with suspects (a man surnamed Sun, 28, and a man surnamed Liu, 23) to kill Bower in her apartment in the Nanshan district of Shenzhen on March 22.”

Bower was last seen alive on March 22 crossing the Lo Wu border from Hong Kong into Shenzhen, where he lived. Xu was the last known person to speak with Bower – on a 9pm phone call that day – but didn’t report his disappearance to police until March 30, eight days later.

While Xu had been in a relationship with Bower for 17 years, she was not the only woman in his life. Earlier reports claimed Bower shared a six year-old son with Xu, but in fact, the mother is another woman, named Shi Xiumei.

Local media believe Bower was involved with several different women, and that a lover’s quarrel may have resulted in his murder. Bower’s corpse was dismembered and several of his body parts were removed from the Shenzhen apartment where he was found, reported the SCMP. The investigation of the body is ongoing.

A motive has not been established by police, but Bower is believed to have recently completed the sale of a Shenzhen property worth over $1 million.

Hong Kong police have confirmed that a 60 year-old British expat who disappeared over three weeks ago was killed in mainland China.

Hilary St John Bower was last seen crossing from Hong Kong to Shenzhen at the Lo Wu border crossing at 5:10pm on March 22. Bower, who worked as an English instructor at the Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, had contacted his girlfriend at 9pm the same day, but has been out of reach ever since.

Bower, who lived in Shenzhen and shared a six year-old son with his girlfriend of seventeen years, was reported missing on March 30.

Mainland authorities informed Hong Kong police of Bower’s death this past Tuesday. In turn, the West Kowloon Missing Person Investigation then informed his girlfriend. Details of Bower’s death have not been made clear, but police say he was likely murdered hours after he last entered Shenzhen.

It is believed that prior to Bower’s death, he was expecting to close a lucrative real estate transaction. A property Bower had purchased in Shenzhen had risen significantly in value, resulting in a sale worth about $9 million Hong Kong dollars (about $1.15 million).

Richard Charles, a colleague of Bower, was “devastated” by his death. Charles said Bower was looking forward to retirement and spending more time with his young son.

Charles was particularly critical of the “shoddy and shambolic” way both mainland and Hong Kong police have treated the investigation. “I find it unbelievable that Hilary’s friends and colleagues have had to find out from the media about this. We are in shock and are extremely upset,” said Charles.
