Decked out in their black SWAT outfits and equipped with automatic rifles, an entire squad of elite police officers were sent into the woods to deal with the menacing boars. In all, four were captured and killed.

The captured boars were transferred to the care of the provincial agricultural ministry. It would appear this SWAT team always gets their ham.

China has spent trillions of dollars extending its influence through soft power, and has mainly done so through hosting high-profile events like the Olympics or this past month’s G20 summit. But while these efforts have been found to be mostly ineffectual, fans of China’s entertainment stars say their growing popularity is proof China’s soft power is working.

This was acutely brought to light at the September 21 birthday celebrations for Roy Wang, one third of China’s top boy band TFBoys. Online attention was so high that a hashtag for Wang’s birthday received 1.5 billion views and eight million comments.

The celebrations also had a real world consequence. Fans celebrated Wang’s 17th birthday by renting billboard space in New York’s Times Square to post a birthday greeting, while the Global Times reports fans in Chongqing spent 10 million yuan to decorate the exterior of a subway with his photos.

tfboy birthday wang junkai

But the attention given towards Wang also served another purpose, one that brought pride to the country. As People’s Daily reported, some fans considered the extravagant celebrations as proof that China’s soft power is working. “Fans have not only celebrated Wang’s birthday, but also promoted China’s soft power worldwide. I bet many people in the US know about Wang now – isn’t that a new method to disseminate our modern culture?” said one netizen.

This opinion has been around for awhile. Last year, a Weibo user named “Love Money like Fate” said:

In this day and age, culture is a prominent part of a country’s strength and competitive power. Every country tries to improve its own culture and soft power as the main way to promote its own development. Roy Wang is an idol of exceptional quality. I hope he will continue to spread China’s excellent culture abroad as our cultural export.

Bringing up a case in which an exchange student at Chongqing University was inspired to learn Chinese because of the TFBoys, another Weibo user said that she was “very proud the day has come in which Chinese culture has been exported abroad and its soft power is growing.

However, not everyone is China is convinced the TFBoys are good for the country. As the People’s Daily reported, one person wrote, “The celebration is shameless and servile. It has impaired the country’s dignity. How on earth can such a shallow and ridiculous show represent China’s modern culture? Fans should use the money to do something better, like helping delinquent students in China.”

With so much riding on the success of the upcoming G20 summit in Hangzhou, Chinese authorities encouraged local residents to leave their own city by offering travel and tourist incentives. However, those not willing to depart still had obligations to fulfill.

Local authorities distributed an English handbook designed to teach basic English proficiency to Hangzhou residents on the chance they were to meet a foreign visitor.  As well, the handbook was chock full of praiseworthy phrases for the G20 host city such as “Hangzhou, the most beautiful city in China”.

But that was way back in July, and now the G20 summit is just days away. How did they do? How well can Hangzhou residents converse in English and welcome international visitors during this crucially important time? China Daily sent a correspondent named “Mike” to Hangzhou tourist attraction West Lake to find out.

hangazhou english proficiency west lake g20

Mike’s task was to walk from one side of the lake to the other and find Lei Feng Pagoda only by conversing in English. In the video, Mike is shown speaking to three people: a student, a police officer, and a tourist.

As seen in the video, Mike is full of praise for each person he speaks with, repeatedly telling them “Your English is very good” and embarrassing each of them in the process. Mike goes on to inquire about how they acquired their English proficiency, asking them if each of them studied abroad in the USA to gain English fluency (none of them did).

But as much as China Daily’s Mike lauded the terse answers given by his subjects, none of them were able to employ the lessons given in the English handbook, a book that Mike calls “very helpful”.

hangazhou english proficiency west lake g20

That means that despite the handbook’s initiative to teach simple English phrases to Hangzhou residents (and tourists visiting Hangzhou), they missed out on a chance to say to a foreigner, “Hangzhou, a paradise on earth.” Likewise, they lost an opportunity to use one of the “4 I’s” of this year’s G20 summit (“innovative”, “invigorated”, “interconnected”, and “inclusive”) or introduce one of the ten scenes of West Lake, like “Remnant snow on the broken bridge in winter”.

But while the handbook has failed to have an impact upon Hangzhou residents and visitors, the campaign to make the G20 summit as successful as possible has gone national.

The People’s Daily has published their cheat sheet of important G20 and Hangzhou vocabulary and phrases (shown below). Although we’ve heard that “Hangzhou xiaolongbao” is a local delicacy, it failed to make the People’s Daily G20-Hangzhou cheat sheet.

All the same, its exclusion shouldn’t stop foreign expats like Mike from heaping praise on Chinese when it is most needed.

The G20 summit in Hangzhou is fast approaching, but its nervous host is worried that foreign special interests will ruin the party and undermine its place on the international stage.

Even though the summit is a gathering of the world’s strongest economies to discuss global growth strategies, regional issues may dominate. An international ruling on the South China Sea territorial dispute, an anti-missile system to be deployed in South Korea in the wake of a North Korean cruise missile launch, and strategic investment of foreign infrastructure are all issues that divide China from its Western peers.

And this division of opinion isn’t one that favors China. Reuters quotes an unidentified senior Western envoy who said, “From where China sits, it looks like the Americans are trying to encircle them.” Even the state-run Study Times published an op-ed that accuses Western powers of trying to limit the rise of Chinese power by “forging a new ‘sacred alliance'”.

It seems there’s not much China can do to prepare for the onslaught of Western criticism that may appear during the G20 summit… that is, unless it can pre-empt any criticism with a bevy of Western approval and praise.

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

The China Daily recently published a video featuring foreign tourists visiting Hangzhou. The video was about how much tourists enjoyed local Chinese delicacies, particularly xiaolongbao (literally “little dragon dumplings”). The video concludes with the tourists expressing how much they love China, and wishing host city Hangzhou good luck on hosting the G20 summit.

If that isn’t a clear endorsement of foreign opinion regarding Hangzhou and the G20 summit, here’s China Daily’s own introduction to clarify any doubts:

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

To ensnare a person’s heart, you must first ensnare their stomach. This is something Hangzhou can do! Hangzhou will serve as the location of this year’s G20 summit. Many foreigners will come to Hangzhou as tourists. Hangzhou xiaolongbao will conquer the taste buds of foreign foodies. This video will ensure your mouth will water. Good luck China! Good luck Hangzhou!

It could be that the main target of this video was a foreign audience, as it was done exclusively in English. However, with Chinese subtitles added, this can also be directed at a domestic audience as proof that foreigners are in total approval of all things Chinese, Hangzhou, and G20 summit-related.

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

What do Chinese think? Do they want foreign approval? Is this a propaganda video? Does this make you hungry for xiaolongbao? Here is what some Chinese netizens have to say about the China Daily video:

只有我而没别人的世界:
Very good, very China.

芯之守护i:
Chinese cuisine will conquer the world!

大风起兮腿毛飘:
The words of these foreigners match those of the imperial edict.

Some people watched the video, and all they could think about was how delicious the food looked:

季诺d:
Watching this made my mouth water.

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

一颗小浆果:
If you want the best xiaolongbao, it’s best to go to Jiangsu where they are thin-skinned with lots of juice.

无锡一介布衣:
Aren’t xiaolongbao best in Wuxi?

Others saw the video has a promotional vehicle for the upcoming G20 summit:

巷口de煙花雨:
This (video) is just for tricking foreigners.

上浮下钝 昨天
Made me barf. Is this more self-promotion?

Some netizens were very critical of the video’s message that seeks approval from abroad:

凉夏微 昨天:
Don’t want to receive recognition from foreigners. This demonstrates how we like to have our idols and put on a show for them. We always want to comfort others and receive their praise and make them happy. But at the moment they’re not pleased, then we feel as though they can’t appreciate us. What does this have to do with self-confidence? Comments here that want foreigners to recognize our worth are really self-abasing.

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

佳佳笑语 昨天
It’s as though Chinese deeply desire recognition from laowai

However, some people took objection to the way the video was viewed as a ‘propaganda’ video:

满是深爱018:
What is all this about ‘insisting on receiving recognition from foreigners’? Are you insisting on showing off your intellect here (in these comments)? All this video is doing is to propagate the culture of Chinese cuisine. Some people really just have such a limited world view.

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

最最最喜欢金在中:
I’m honestly speechless. All these (foreigners) have done is come to Hangzhou as tourists, eat these xiaolongbao and find them delicious. That’s all. What’s up with all these comments being so tart?

That said, some netizens pointed out that the eating of the ‘xiaolongbao’ appears to be just a charade:

鄭筱婷:
Why isn’t there any soup (in the dumplings)?

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

诚染:
This is not an accurate depiction (of what xiaolongbao are). Anyone who has eaten a xiaolongbao knows that they have a frail structure. You can’t eat them with your hands, otherwise the soup inside the dumpling will run out, ruining the taste. The proper way to eat xiaolongbao is to lightly grip them (using chopsticks) and suck out the juice, and season with vinegar using own personal preference. That’s the perfect way to eat it.

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

Other netizens continued to point out that when it comes to food, the video is inaccurate:

孟春Pumpkin:
Xiaolongbao are not a special delicacy of Hangzhou, but rather a regional one that belongs to Shanghai and Zhejiang. Can these comments not try to act so superior? Your northern steamed buns aren’t so delicious, in my opinion.

西安烟花爆竹:
Authentic Hangzhou xiaolongbao originate from outside Hangzhou

翼天神:
Xiaolongbao are already available all over the world.

阳光腿子:
Was the xiaolongbao eaten by the Muslim girl Halal-approved? (One common variety of xiaolongbao contains pork with minced crab meat and roe)

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

However much these foreigners enjoy their xiaolongbao, netizens pointed out that Hangzhou will be basically off-limits to Chinese during the summit:

不死鸟出世:
Going to Hangzhou now is like entering the customs of a foreign country!

沙漠之狐1234:
Many stores have closed down (for the G20 summit); there’s not even places to go eat. They really know how to hype!

翁同学呀:
Will Hangzhou’s xiaolongbao stores still be open (during the G20 summit)?

So, what’s the point of the video? One netizens poses the question, while another answers:

my217_NON:
Why must we win over the stomachs of foreigners?

非*:
Just one xiaolongbao is all it takes to win you over.

laowai praise hangzhou g20 summit china daily video

Watch the video here, but be forewarned: if you don’t find yourself having a strong opinion either way, it’s likely that you’ll find yourself getting hungry.

Can you go a day without cash in China? That’s what one German blogger wanted to know by spending an entire day in Hangzhou, host of the upcoming G20 summit, and the Chinese news was there to report it.

Thomas Dirksen, a Weibo blogger with some 140,000 followers and described as the “German version of Papi Jiang”, challenged himself to see if he could spend an entire day in Hangzhou without using any cash. Dirksen only used the Alipay mobile payment system to make purchases, and found that cashless systems were found throughout Hangzhou, used from everything from food stalls to bus fares.

The facts speak for the themselves: Alipay in supported by a majority of businesses and stores in Hangzhou that include 98 percent of taxis, 95 percent of supermarkets and convenience stores, and over half of the city’s 40,000 restaurants and eateries.

Dirksen has provided Chinese news media with a surplus of quotes and photographs to promote both Hangzhou and Alipay. Here, then, are some of the praise Dirksen had for the upcoming host of the G20 summit:

happy laowai zhifubao thomas dirksen expat blogger

Truthfully speaking, I’m not willing to leave the house in Frankfurt unless I have money in my pocket. I’ve been to hundreds of cities in over 30 countries, and I have to say that Hangzhou is the world capital of mobile payments, for sure!

happy laowai zhifubao thomas dirksen expat blogger

I’ve been to over 30 countries all over the world, but there isn’t a city that is as convenient as Hangzhou. Even if it’s a roadside shaobing stall, I can still pay with my mobile wallet.

happy laowai zhifubao thomas dirksen expat blogger

Chinese have told me that you can use Alipay anywhere. At first I didn’t believe them, and yet now I’m eating a shaobing (paid with Alipay)!

happy laowai zhifubao thomas dirksen expat blogger

While in Rome, do as the Romans do. All of my Chinese and foreign friends in China use mobile payments. Like me, they all enjoy the convenience of this payment method, so much so that using a mobile phone to take care of your financial needs isn’t even a novel thing anymore.

happy laowai zhifubao thomas dirksen expat blogger

Even without any cash on hand, you can live an unfettered life in Hangzhou. What a surprise!

happy laowai zhifubao thomas dirksen expat blogger

If you ask me where I learned all of this, it’s from recommendations given by my German and Chinese friends, as well as learning strategies from online forums! Today, I’m challenging myself to spend a day sightseeing without any cash. Before coming here, I did a lot of preparation. But if I were to do this in Germany, it’d be impossible!

Dirksen is a fluent Chinese-speaking graduate of Fudan University who has since married a Chinese woman. When asked how he views Chinese and what he hopes to achieve by learning it, Dirksen had this to say:

Chinese pronunciation and writing is very difficult. I will use all of my ‘primal force” to learn and assimilate myself into the Chinese lifestyle. I will also continue to introduce China to my German friends through better social discourse.

1984 is George Orwell’s masterpiece about a dystopian future in which a totalitarian regime maintains its authority through propaganda and torture. But as influential as it has become, it may not be for everyone – especially Chinese internet users.

2 plus 2 equals 5 propaganda censorship video

Bloomberg Businessweek recently forwarded a video on its Weibo micro-blogging account (shown above) that stumped a lot of its readers. Described by Bloomberg as “thought provoking”, the 5:03 minute video is a foreign language production that revolves around a central concept put forth in Orwell’s novel: “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.”

2 plus 2 equals 5 propaganda censorship video

In the video, a teacher in front of a classroom teaches a group of students that “2+2=5” using rote learning. When one student questions the lesson, the teacher tells him not to subvert authority and simply do as he is told. However, another student won’t accept that “2+2=5”, and pleads with his fellow students to not follow the teacher. Angered, the teacher leaves while the other students complain objecting to the lesson will only bring trouble for all the students.

When he returns, the teacher is flanked by three older students wearing red armbands. All three older students repeat that “2+2=5”, and the objecting student is given one last chance to change his ways. When he writes that the answer is “4”, he is violently killed by the three older students who are wielding imaginary guns. The teacher asks the class if there are any more objections, and then the lesson continues.

The 1984-inspired video drew a lot of mixed responses from Chinese netizens. Some called it out for being an Orwellian reference, but not that many were willing to apply it to China; instead, most comments referenced incidents where truth was suppressed outside of China, as in the case of Copernicus.

A number of netizens were simply flummoxed by the video, and could not make heads or tails out of it. Others still outright rejected it as some kind of disruptive foreign ploy to destabilize China.

What do Chinese netizens think about “2+2=5”? Here are some of their online comments:

Tourists visiting Manhattan’s Times Square over the next few days are in for a surprise courtesy of the Chinese government: a propaganda video asserting the country’s claim to disputed territory in the South China Sea.

Running until August 3rd, the 3-minute video will be aired on one of Times Square’s most visible video screens approximately 120 times a day.

The video features images of the South China Sea accompanied by English text explaining why the islands belong to China. The propaganda video has been well-publicized in China, with China Daily publishing a video report on the story that included the following images:

If you’re wondering what these Chinese people are looking at, here’s how it looks at street level:

A recent ruling by an international tribunal in The Hague rejecting China’s claim to the territory, has sparked outrage throughout the country. Anti-American sentiment following the decision has resulted in protests at KFC restaurants around China, while one man was attacked and called a “traitor” for wearing Nike-branded shoes in China’s northeast.

As for Chinese authorities, the video addresses the government’s position on The Hague decision: “China did not participate in the illegal South China Sea arbitration, nor accepts the Award so as to defend the solemnity of International law.”

Last summer, another Chinese propaganda video was broadcast in Times Square to increase awareness of Chinese war veterans in advance of the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII, celebrated in Beijing with a military parade. Having advertising access to Times Square is significant to Chinese interests for establishing a voice in the international community.

Proving equally successful, is a recent Times Square advertisement for the popular Chinese ride-sharing app, UCAR, which is proving to be a formidable adversary to Uber:

In case you can’t make it to NYC, here’s an altered version of the Times Square video; and here is the Chinese version of the same video.

In an effort to explain China’s economy to foreigners, the People’s Daily has published a video comparing Chinese economics to one of the country’s most ancient cultural hallmarks: kung fu.

According to the video, titled The Kung Fu of the Chinese Economy, there is an explanation rooted in Kung Fu for each and every recent economic policy introduced in China.

kung fu of Chinese economy

First, here’s the video The Kung Fu of the Chinese Economy:

Now, let’s take a look at the video’s four lessons:

Retreat to Move Forward 退为进 静制动

kung fu of Chinese economy

Borrowing from the final chapter of Sun Tzu’s The 36 Strategems (usually seen as 走为上), “retreat to move forward” describes the current sluggish state of the Chinese economy. As the video states, “Slower growth is needed to allow time for restructuring before pushing to the next level.”

“Retreat to move forward” also involves a “reactive” element adopting a “wait and see” posture, an element integral to certain martial arts like tai chi or wing chun emphasizing slower movements to “harness the power of your surroundings”.

Perseverance Ensures Success 徐疾有序 久久为功

kung fu of Chinese economy

“Don’t give up and you will eventually succeed” emphasizes the second principle. The second part of the principle speaks to the importance of “enduring small setbacks”. In kung fu it is important to train and learn to endure both the hottest and coldest days of the year to reach your full potential. According to the video, in economic terms, it is important to persevere and ride the hot highs as well as the cold lows.

Do as Nature Does! Learn from Nature! 天人合一 道法自然

kung fu of Chinese economy

According to the video, China’s massive economic growth must finally be reined in because “The Chinese economy can no longer afford to ignore the role of nature and the environment.” As the text above tells us, there must be “harmony between humans and nature; the Way of the Tao is to obey nature.”

Share Widely for Mutual Benefit 惠己达人 精进共享

kung fu of Chinese economy

In the video, the Chinese martial monk is seen giving a hand to different martial artists from different countries. We’re told that “Above all, Kung Fu strives to cultivate the mind by encouraging different styles and promoting integration and sharing,” and that “Sharing is also essential to the future of the Chinese economy.”

As nice as that sentiment is, sharing has never been an integral part of Kung Fu’s heritage in China, where competing sects and disciplines have historically battled one another for supremacy and secrecy, particularly in its cinematic depiction referred to in the video. To provide one recent example, this spring’s latest Ip Man sequel features a plot based upon one kung fu master trying to win martial dominance in a city through a hostile and brutal takeover where sharing is not allowed.

kung fu of Chinese economy

Kung fu is a culture that can provide enormous benefits to its practitioners. Likewise, the Chinese economy has made tremendous strides over the past decades. And yet, despite Westerners looking for answers, comparing martial arts to the slowing state of the Chinese economy seems a bit of a stretch.

Are you a foreigner in China who likes to meet locals, and have been known to strike up romantic relationships with gifts and flattery? If so, you should know that you are showing the telltale signs of being a spy.

China is beefing up its defenses against foreign espionage, and they’re hoping to raise public awareness of this danger to national security with its first-ever National Security Education Day held last week.

As reported by China Law Translate, one of the propaganda materials released was called “Dangerous Love” that was seen in residential areas of Xicheng, Beijing.

The 16-panel cartoon follows the story of Xiaoli, a Chinese woman who works in an information department of the country’s civil service. Xiaoli is wooed by a foreigner named David who eventually convinces Xiaoli to hand over sensitive material. Police eventually confront Xiaoli with the revelation that David is in fact a spy, and that she herself is guilty of violating Chinese law regarding state secrets.

As with a number of recent Chinese propaganda releases, “Dangerous Love” uses cartoons as a way to make its content and intentions very clear to its readers.

As translated by China Law Translate, here’s the entire poster campaign:

XIAOLI’s FRIEND: A foreign friend has organized a gathering tonight… You’re always trying to increase your foreign language level, why don’t you go with me?
XIAOLI: Sure.

DAVID: My name is David and I’m a visiting scholar researching issues about China. I’m really interested in chatting with all of you.

DAVID: Everybody please introduce yourself and say a little something about your work. Let’s start with this pretty lady.
XIAOLI: Oh, OK!

XIAOLI: I’m Xiao Li, I just tested into the civil service after graduating college and work in a foreign publicity (propaganda) department.
DAVID: OK

After that party, David began to meet with Xiao Li often and gave her gifts.
DAVID: You’re pretty, warm, and exceptional. To tell you the truth, I fell for you the first time I saw you.

XIAOLI (thinking to herself): Having a handsome, romantic and talented foreign boyfriend is pretty good!

The two begin a romantic involvement.
DAVID: My dear, what exactly do you do at your work?
XIAO LI: I write internal references as a basis for central policies.

DAVID: Great! Lend me those internal references so I can take a look. This will really help me write academic articles.
XIAO LI: I can’t, we have a confidentiality system.

DAVID: Dear, do you still need to keep secrets from me? I’m just taking a look to use in academic articles.
XIAO LI: Uhh, OK then.

XIAO LI: This is a copy I made, give it back as soon as you’re done.
DAVID: Don’t worry, sweetheart.

XIAOLI: What happened? David hasn’t called me recently, and his phone is always off.

OFFICER: Are you Xiao Li? We’re from the State Administration of National Security. Please come with us.
XIAO LI: What? What’s going on?

OFFICER: David is an overseas spy in China to steal political and military information, and we have already captured him. Did you provide him with these ‘internal references?’
XIAO LI: What?

XIAO LI: I didn’t know he was a spy, he used me!
OFFICER: You show a for a State employee. You are suspected of violating our nation’s law.

A warning from the National Security Organs. According to Chapter 1 on crimes endangering national security, article 111 of the Criminal Law of the P.R.C., whoever steals, secretly gathers, purchases, or illegally provides state secrets or intelligence for an organization, institution, or personnel outside the country is to be sentenced to not less than five years and not more than 10 years of fixed-term imprisonment; when circumstances are particularly serious, he is to be sentenced to not less than 10 years of fixed-term imprisonment, or a life sentence; and when circumstances are relatively minor, he is to be sentenced to not more than five years of fixed-term imprisonment, criminal detention, control, or deprivation of political rights.

Article 27 of Chapter IV of the Counter-Espionage Law provides that: where extraterritorial institutions, organizations or individuals carry out, or instigate or financially support others in carrying out espionage activities, or where an institution, organization or individual within the territory linked to a foreign institution, organization or individual conducts espionage activities, and it constitutes a crime, it is pursued for criminal responsibility in accordance with law.

National Security Education Day also saw the following video made by the national PSB in Beijing. The video is in the style of a cartoon that uses depictions of James Bond and Ethan Hunt from Mission: Impossible to illustrate what is and isn’t a spy (no English subtitles).
