A Chinese tourist has been given a $1,000 fine for disobeying safety rules at Yellowstone National Park in the US by walking off a boardwalk onto the Mammoth Hot Springs thermal area Monday night.

A person reported to park rangers that the man walked on terrace formations near the Liberty Cap formation. The Chinese tourist also broke through the fragile travertine crust to collect water from the thermal runoff.

US federal regulations forbid visitors from collecting any park resources. Yellowstone visitors are directed to follow safety regulations provided at the entrance to the park.

Park rangers eventually found the man, identified only as a Chinese national in a park press release. The man admitted he did not read the park’s safety regulations, and admitted to rangers he had taken water from the hot springs. The Chinese tourist has been summoned to the Yellowstone Justice Center Court for the violation of off-boardwalk travel in a thermal area, for which he will also have to pay a $30 court processing fee.

Yellowstone spokeswoman Charissa Reid said the regulations are designed to protect park patrons as well as the park’s own natural features.

Reid emphasized the severity of the incident by saying “It wasn’t just like a short little jaunt.”

Just last week, a 23 year-old Oregon man died when he fell into a hot spring at Yellowstone Park after leaving the boardwalk. This July, a trial will be held for four men charged for walking on the surface of Grand Prismatic.

Chinese readers are likely most familiar with Yellowstone Park from a news story from last August. That’s when a Chinese doctor named Liu Zhenjiang who was visiting the park provided medical aid to an elderly park visitor with breathing problems.

QQ News reported Americans at the scene were so impressed with Liu that they called him a “Chinese hero” and gave him a number of “thumbs up” in praise.

Due to a depreciated Yen and favorable visa policies, Japan has become a favorite destination for Chinese tourists over the past couple of years. And yet, it appears there can be too much of a good thing as Japan’s recent cherry blossom season has been overwhelmed by Chinese tourists who are displaying poor behavior and are damaging the trees.

With three times the number of visitors over last year, the problem has gotten so bad that recent antics by Chinese tourists broadcast on Japanese television have prompted calls for the creation of a “Chinese-only” zone in order to limit their damaging effect on the cherry blossoms.

What’s more, Japanese media have coined a new term to describe this phenomenon that loosely translates to “Chinese-style flower appreciation”.

Chinese tourists were seen climbing trees, bending branches, and plucking flowers from trees to put in their hair on Japanese television. The result is a number of damaged trees with snapped branches.

The humilation of seeing their countrymen lose face abroad has been too much for Chinese netizens, who outright condemn this behavior as acts of insults towards China.

A Weibo post of this news urged, “Please spread this news! Don’t make ‘Chinese-style blossom appreciation’ a thing in Japan.

Meanwhile, these misbehaving Chinese tourists have been derided on the Internet. “After insulting their own country here, they go abroad and make us lose face,” wrote one person, while another said, “(They) need to be human-flesh searched (doxxed).

While criminal charges have yet to be laid following the August 12 Tianjin explosions, local authorities are looking to transform the blast site into a commemorative park to honor those that died.

The proposed 24 hectare park will include a monument to the victims. It will also house new city kindergartens and some 5,000 new apartments for residents whose homes were damaged in the blast.

High traces of cyanide were discovered at the blast site last month, which officials maintain pose no health risk to Tianjin residents.

Twelve suspects have been detained in connection with the explosions, including 11 officials and port executives accused of dereliction of duty and abuse of power. No criminal charges have been laid.

Last month, the Communist Party fired the head of China’s work safety regulator for suspected corruption. Coincidentally, the regulator was the former deputy mayor of Tianjin. Despite firing the official, the Party has not accused him of any direct responsibility for the explosion.

A growing death toll from the Tianjin blasts currently puts the number of fatalities at 160.

[Warning: this post contains violent content that some readers may find objectionable.]

Five people fell off a motorized amusement ride in Zhejiang this afternoon, killing two.

Eyewitnesses say the five riders were not properly strapped into their seats with safety harnesses when the ride called “Crazy Scream” went into operation at a amusement park at Longshan Park in Pingyang County, Wenzhou. As a result of the accident, three park patrons fell to the ground directly below, while another two were thrown a distance away.

The deceased have been named as Chen and Zhou, both from Aojiang county. The other injured have been sent to Pingyang No. 1 Hospital where reports of their numbers vary between three and two.

Victims can be seen bleeding profusely onto the ground as bystanders are seen talking on the phone as others take pictures.

Police have shut down the park, which has been deemed as “operating illegally”. The operator of the amusement park has been taken into custody as police continue their investigation.

May 1st was the first day of operation for the amusement park.

Graphic photos taken at the scene can be seen here. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

It’s that time of the year again. With the warmer weather comes the cherry blossoms, and the hordes of people to see them. However, instead of appreciating mother nature’s beauty, many Chinese are instead defacing it.

Around 100,000 daily visitors have been going to Wuhan University to see the cherry blossoms each day, but as the photos demonstrate, they haven’t been particularly respectful. There have been numerous reports of visitors littering around the cherry trees and walking on the grass around them, something that is prohibited in many parks throughout the country. Some are even breaking off tree branches to take home as souvenirs.

The situation in Beijing isn’t much better. Tourists at Yuyuantan Park have been seen climbing trees and breaking tree branches. Last year, a number of cherry trees were reportedly damaged at the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen in Nanjing after a huge influx of tourists came to see the first blossom.

In 2012, tourists at Chrysanthemum Stage Park in Nanjing reportedly used bamboo poles to knock down loquat fruit growing from trees on park grounds. Also in 2012, tourists visiting Xixi National Wetlands park in Zhejiang during Golden Week were seen littering and climbing trees to pick persimmons.

live poisonous snake release shenzhen animal rightsThe release of a number of poisonous snakes by a Shenzhen woman has incurred the wrath of a number of netizens.

The woman in question posted nine pictures to her Weibo account (@郎卡卓玛) back on July 14, reports the Nandu. One of the photographs show her releasing rattlesnakes and cobras into what many netizens suspected to be a public park. The text accompanying the photo reads:

You should praise us beautiful girls and handsome boys for releasing these live snakes. The poisonous ones were all released by her. Such bravery [thumbsup.emo]

Almost a month later, the unidentified woman’s Weibo account has become very busy as a wave of netizens have come to criticize her. Yesterday at around 4pm, her posts had been forwarded some 7000 times as the outrage against her grew. Some Weibo verified users even got involved by saying that the release of poisonous snakes is a public issue.

However, the precise location of where the photographs were taken have not been verified, fueling netizen speculation. Furthermore, requests for an interview with a reporter have gone unanswered, leaving any facts to this story unconfirmed, such as whether the woman is an animal rights activist or simply someone with a grudge.

Following the outcry from netizens, the woman tried to delete her Weibo account. Later, she tried to change her name, and then later still the woman made a statement in which she apologized for her actions:

Today I have made everyone very annoyed because of myself, to which I want to express how sorry I am to all of you! However, I didn’t release poisonous snakes into a public park as everyone claims; instead, we released these animals back into the natural world. All living things are equal. These animals come from nature, and so we have let these animals go back to nature! The deletion of Weibo content was to disallow the pointless attacks that kept being made. We treat Weibo as a diary, and so with that we invite everyone to stop their speculation.

Shenzhen Police and Shenzhen Public Parks are investigating.

Southern China is home to 35 types of snakes that are venomous. These include the Chinese cobra, the king cobra, Fea’s viper, and Russell’s viper.

Annual records of snake bite fatalities in China range from 450 to over 4,000, an amount that is dwarfed by snake bite fatalities in India, Bangladesh and some African countries.

Snake bites most commonly occur in rural farming communities where workers use manual agricultural tools and walk barefoot. Unfortunately, these are also communities where access to healthcare is often limited.
