You are invited to go to Guangzhou and you don’t necessarily want to go, but you do because the money says you have to go.

When you arrive in Guangzhou, your handlers show you all over the place, and there’s always an expectant look on their faces as you continually dole out your approval. As per China rules, all foreigners are forbidden to criticism any aspect of Chinese culture; rather, your job is to nod, smile, and try to complete the business you came to China to do.

Many expats know this as, “Trying to maintain your integrity”. (good luck you SOBs)

So when you get taken to a public square and there’s lots of dancing grannies, and your handlers look at your with a look of craven approval, you try not to lie, so you just say the first half-truth that comes into your head that isn’t a complete lie like the rest of your trip: “…..er….We have a lot of space in Australia, and this activity of yours could be done in this open space there.” You don’t mention that this open space is in the outback right next to Ayer’s Rock, but your handlers appear to be very impressed by your statement, and prepare to spin it into something much more.

So when netizens crow about anything expats do in China, it’s according to a double standard that fits the rules of the local narrative no matter which way it swings.

Barbed wire strung up by a Wuhan property management was not enough to deter the dancing grannies who simply cut the wire and kept dancing.
