That being said, rates of violent crime, including sexual assault, are lower in China than in many Western countries but are likely higher than in much of the rest of East Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong). If you talk to local Chinese women, you will find their perceptions are that risks abound, and they take precautions when walking/traveling alone. It certainly seems reasonable to do so. My wife carries a whistle, small LED flashlight, and nonlethal blunt impact weapon in her bag. As another commenter points out wisely, you cannot rely on police/security assistance or bystander intervention at all here.

But what I heard from good female friends in the last year in Beijing has changed my view of “safe” China somewhat. One friend, after exiting the taxi and walking towards her appartment block at night has been stopped by two drunk middle-aged Chinese guys. She tried to ignore them and walk past, but one of the guys took her arms and pressed her against the wall, pushing his body on hers. She screamed and could force herself loose after a while, and ran away. She doesn’t walk home alone at night anymore, so I and other friends now accompany her. She has stopped going out very much, even though she was a party animal before.

Another friend very often gets groped in crowds and gets hit on in an obnoxious fashion by Chinese men. She and her boyfriend will leave the country soon as she’s fed-up with the place.

A male colleague at work has been brutally beaten by a group of Chinese in a nightclub early in the morning, and got hospitalized for a couple of days. He too has left the country and won’t be back, despite all the time he spent learning Chinese.

I got in a fight with a taxi driver when he refused to drive me to my location, but wanted the agreed price still and got physical when I refused. I was chased by him and two of his buddies right to the door of my appartment, quite a scary experience.

I still think China is a relatively safe place, but let’s not downplay the experiences people have around us. In all the cases I know these instances of physical and sexual violence have resulted in the person reassessing their plans in China.

Why do we pretend it’s anything else? That’s why these people are so damn insecure! That’s also why they’re so jealous of foreign men!
