Would Female-only Trains on the Beijing Subway Stop Sexual Harassment?
Posted: 01/27/2015 5:51 pmSexual harassment and assaults have become such a concern in China that some are proposing introducing women-only train cars on the Beijing subway during rush hour.
The proposal was announced at the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Xiao Mingzheng, one of the two members responsible for raising the proposal, explained that women-only carriages would reduce the incidents of sexual harassment. “By setting up special carriages, women will be better respected and protected,” he said.
While there is no specific plan, the proposal has already gained momentum with the support of high-ranking officials. Zhou Zhengyu, director with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, has described the proposal as a “trend” that will be extended to other modes of public transport.

While the proposal is driven by concern over sexual predators on the Beijing subway, it’s hard to know how serious the problem is. Many women who are assaulted feel shame about the attack, so don’t report it to police.
Last July, a video surfaced of an incident that took place on Line 1 of the Chengdu Metro. It was captured by a female witness who didn’t do anything to stop it.
