Car speeding down Huanxi Road in Guangzhou kills two cyclists

The couple, who were on a bike, collided with the car and both died instantly. Of the two people in the car, the passenger is in hospital and the driver has been detained. The car was exceeding the speed limit, according to witnesses.
After the collision on Huanxi Road at about 8:50 p.m., the two people on the bike were thrown several meters onto the side of the road, and the wreckage of their bike and parts of the car were strewn across the ground. Witnesses say the car was travelling in excess of 100 kilometres an hour.
Different accounts of what happened have been given in microblogs, according to the newspaper. One account said that five people were hit by the car and three are now in hospital. The paper tried to interview the passenger in the speeding car, but the hospital refused to grant access.
The day after the accident, police confirmed that the rider of the bike, a man surnamed Wu, 22, and the passenger, a woman surnamed Li, 22, both died instantly. The passenger in the car, surnamed Chen, sustained head injuries and is in a stable condition in hospital.
The cause of the accident is being investigated, and the driver Jiang, 24, is being held for questioning. Both victims were students at Guangdong Medical School. Chen is a student at another university. Jiang is not a student and is thought to work in real estate. The relationship between Chen and Jiang is unknown.
Tributes have pured in for the dead couple. It was said that Li was beautiful and academically brilliant, Wu was tall and handsome, and they were “a perfect couple.”
