“The ten superlatives of Shenzhen” goes big on Sina Weibo
Posted: 06/4/2013 7:00 amA list titled the “Ten Superlatives of Shenzhen,” originally published on the Sina Weibo account Shenzhen: 22 Degree Community, has been forwarded by a lot of popular regional microblogs over the past few days. The list covers ten things that, for better or worse, Shenzhen has more of than any other Chinese city.
Below is The Nanfang’s translation of the list. See how many you agree with?
Superlative 1: China’s most open and inclusive city
No matter where you come from, whether you’ve been a hero or a lowlife, whether or not you’re from a good background, whether you’re an outstanding graduate or a migrant worker – you’re a Shenzhener as soon as you get here.
Superlative 2: The city with the highest ratio of women to men
Although this has since decreased, the ratio of women to men reached 7:2 at one point. At that time, many of the largest factories in the city were entirely staffed by females.
Superlative 3: The liveliest city
The city is 32 years old and the average age of its residents is under 30. The city, like its inhabitants, is enviably young.
Superlative 4: The city with the most emotional complexity
Some say Shenzhen is a cold, emotionless place, some say it is a difficult place in which to find true love. No matter what people say, countless facts suggest that Shenzhen is far from an emotionally barren place. You really have to immerse yourself in the place to understand it.
Superlative 5: The city that offers the least sense of belonging
Some people are unable to buy a house and thus live precariously when they get here. Some people don’t have a Shenzhen hukou, and are forced to drift through life. Some people become unemployed when they’re middle-aged and can’t get a job again.
A lot of these people are left finding it hard to choose whether to stay in Shenzhen.
Superlative 6: The city where life has the largest amount of pressure
Every year a large number of graduates with advanced degrees descend on Shenzhen. This makes the labour market more competitive for everyone. If you rest for a minute, your rice bowl may be stolen from under your nose.
Shenzhen transformed into a metropolis in the blink of an eye. Shenzheners have to reinvent themselves every day. They have to rewrite the myth and create new miracles.
Superlative 7: The most web-savvy city
Shenzhen is known as China’s most web-savvy city and this is beyond doubt. Shenzhen has been recognised throughout the world for its technological innovation. Last year it won many international prizes for this.
We have a deeply intimate relationship with the world wide web.
Superlative 8: The city with the most opportunities for migrant workers
Some have said that Shenzhen is heaven for migrant workers. This doesn’t quite make sense. Even though their lives are difficult, this city gives them hope. They live at the bottom of the heap and they have the most exhausting lives. They earn relatively little and have to live in urban villages.
Superlative 9: The city with the largest number of non-natives
Shenzhen is a city of migrants. As soon as reform and opening up was implemented, people came from all over the country to work here. Its status as a special economic zone meant the population grew especially quickly.
There are around 14 million residents, even though there are only around 3 million Shenzhen hukou holders. 11 million non-hukou holders is by far the largest amount in the country.
Superlative 10: The most efficient city
One of the earliest legends of Shenzhen is that the Guomao building was constructed at a rate of one floor per 3 days. Also, a Mr Yuan from Shekou is said to have introduced the slogan “Time is money. Efficiency is life.” This has become the motto of many Shenzhen people.
This pragmatism has made a lot of dreams come true.
