The Spin Doctor – The Field, “Looping State of Mind”
This week The Spin Doctor reviews The Field’s “Looping State of Mind”. Though Sweden’s Axel Willner, a.k.a., The Field, would best be described as a minimal techno producer, he has uniquely, albeit accidentally, positioned himself as a minimal techno producer. For a performer who rarely uses guitars, rarely employs vocals, and rarely produces tracks less than 7 minutes long, that’s quite the feat. Continue reading

The Spin Doctor – Bombay Bicycle Club, “A Different Kind of Fix”
This week The Spin Doctor reviews Bombay Bicycle Club’s third LP in three years, “A Different Kind of Fix”. BBC has essentially thrown all of the elements of their prior two LP’s into a cement-mixer to see what might emerge. The intriguing thing, however, is that what has emerged is far more interesting than either the alt-rock of their debut or the folk-lite of their sophomore release. Continue reading

The Spin Doctor – Rival Sons, “Pressure & Time”
This week The Spin Doctor reviews Rival Sons’ sophomore LP “Pressure & Time”. Drawing from late 60′s and early 70′s hard blues rock, Rival Sons are a solid four piece, swinging for the fences. It’s not quite Zeppelin or Sabbath, but it ain’t half bad either. Continue reading
The Spin Doctor – The Rosebuds, “Loud Planes Fly Low”
This week The Spin Doctor reviews The Rosebuds “Loud Planes Fly Low”. The result of recently divorced band members Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp, the lush, mid-tempo guitar pop arrangements are restrained, if not a little safe. Continue reading

Explosions In The Sky – “Take Care, Take Care, Take Care”
This week the Spin Doctor reviews “Take Care, Take Care, Take Care”, the new record by Austin Texas, instrumental, post-rock heroes Explosions In The Sky. After a four year absence, the band make a thunderous return with a record that has a renewed sense of focus and direction their last LP sorely lacked. Continue reading

The Spin Doctor – The Weeknd, House of Balloons
This week The Spin Doctor reviews “House of Balloons” by The Weeknd. “House of Balloons” is full of contradictions: huge club beats and classic R&B riffs, coupled with dark, grimy, often dubbed-out layers and drug addled, sexually explicit lyrics. Enjoy! Continue reading

The Spin Doctor – Colin Stetson, New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges
This week The Spin Doctor reviews Colin Stetson’s new record. Perhaps the greatest complement one could pay Stetson, is that he does not fit neatly into any one box. Although the saxophone is his main axe, to call “New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges” a Jazz record, would be to unfairly deny the scope and originality of Stetson’s incredible compositions.
