1/3 of Shenzhen Markets Selling Contaminated Noodles

Posted: 05/12/2014 5:37 pm

hoh funThrough unannounced inspections of the city’s markets, Shenzhen municipal health inspectors have discovered a full third of tested fresh noodles do not conform to health standards, the Nandu reported.

Of the 99 sellers of wet noodles and Hoh Fun (flat white noodles) inspected, 34 sellers broke regulation, mostly by adding food additives.

Six were found to have food additives including borax (four cases), formaldehyde (two cases); preservatives including benzoic acid (22 cases), dehydrogenated acid, and sorbic acid; food coloring was also found that included lemon yellow (9 cases), and sunset yellow. Three cases were found to have both additives of benzoic acid and lemon yellow.

The inspection covered 21 farmer’s markets located in Luohu, Futian, Nanshan, Bao’an, Longgang, Longhua New District, and Guangming New District, and was carried out from end of March to beginning of April of this year.

As well, the inspection was extended to city center supermarkets and restaurants. Focusing upon prepackaged noodles, the city health inspector found that out of a sample of 172 different sellers of noodles, 49 were found to contain illegal food additives such as benzoic acid.

The findings of the Shenzhen health inspectors have been transferred over to the local Public Security Bureau for policing.

Public schools in Shenzhen’s Nanshan District to accept expat kids

Posted: 03/28/2014 12:33 pm

Children of expats working in Nanshan District could be allowed to attend public schools in the district, according to a proposed policy, Shenzhen Daily reported today. The policy will also apply to children of Chinese parents who studied abroad and returned to China, and children who have permanent Hong Kong or Macao residency but whose parents are mainlanders, Nanshan’s education bureau said.

The paper has more:

The policy is an effort by the district’s government to enhance Nanshan’s appeal for international talents and professionals. Eligible parents must either have made investments or paid taxes in Nanshan, the policy states. Details and a timetable for implementation were unavailable.

Chinese public schools are tuition-free under the country’s nine-year compulsory education program.

Nanshan has seven international schools, Liu Gengping, the bureau’s chief, said. Many Shenzhen families whose children have Hong Kong or Macao residency cannot afford tuition at international schools, however.

A Shenzhen Government policy on free compulsory education that was implemented in 2012 excluded foreign children and children with Hong Kong or Macao residency from attending Shenzhen’s public schools.

More than 15,000 students from Shenzhen cross the border every weekday to attend Hong Kong schools.

Would you send your kids to a public school in Nanshan if you had the chance?

Shenzhen temple the latest elaborate and controversial rooftop structure

Posted: 08/21/2013 4:29 pm

A rooftop temple on top of Meijia Square housing complex in Shenzhen’s Nanshan District has become the latest in a series of controversial rooftop structures in China.

The report comes after a privately owned Beijing rooftop villa made from artificial rocks came to public attention last week. Authorities have since given the Beijing owner 15 days to demolish it, or face punishment. Local residents said they feared it might have caused the entire 26-storey apartment block to collapse in on itself.

Carl Ji, a Shenzhen resident, told The Nanfang today: “This kind of construction work is illegal. Shenzhen’s government should demolish it as soon as possible to set an example. Who is this guy that he thinks he can build his own temple on a public area? He’s just interested in his own private interests. It is arrogant.”

The 21st storey apartment on which the Shenzhen temple has been built is said to be worth 15 million yuan (US$2.5 million). The building’s tenants are all “either high-ranking officials or very rich people,” according to the report by Yangcheng Evening News today.

“The Meijia Square housing complex is an expensive property where every square metre is valued at about 30,000 yuan (HK$38,000),” the South China Morning Post also said in a follow-up report earlier today.

The Post added: “Neighbours were unsure who the owner of the property was, but said that the temple was often occupied and used for traditional Chinese religious practices… neighbours did say that golden sheets of joss paper… occasionally floated down from the temple’s perch.”

The temple, suspected to be an illegal structure, first came to public attention Monday after Shenzhen Special Zone Daily seized on the controversial local oddity in the wake of the Beijing story.

Particular concerns with the Shenzhen temple, aside from structural issues, are regarding restricted access to the rooftop, which is a public area designated as an emergency escape route — though how residents are supposed to “escape” from a rooftop in the case of a fire, for example, is perhaps a question in itself.

“A police spokesperson said the department would demolish the structure if illegal construction was confirmed, and measures such as the freezing of property rights would be taken if the owner opposed the demolition,” Shenzhen Daily reported earlier this week.

A fingerprint scanner built into the roof’s gate is apparently intended to keep away unwanted visitors.

The case is still under investigation by local authorities.
