Hundreds of “Naked Officials” Punished in Guangdong

Posted: 05/31/2014 4:56 pm

streaking will ferrel old school“Yes, they call him the streak…”: In yet another crackdown on government corruption, hundreds of Guangdong Province officials have been punished with demotions for being “naked officials”, reports China Daily.

127 Dongguan officials have been demoted, as have 128 officials from Jiangmen. None of them will be considered for promotion. Nine are said to have been in senior positions.

Called a “luoguan” (裸官) in Chinese, a naked official is a government official who has sent his wife and children to live and study abroad, thus being a man that is “naked” without his family.

The government believes naked officials set a poor example because they send away their most prized commodities for safe keeping.

Yang Jianwei, vice president of the Guangdong Provincial CPC Party School, told the People’s Daily, “Naked officials are not necessarily problematic officials. But when you are holding a high post in the country alone by yourself, how can you make the people believe that you’ll dedicate all you have to serve them?

Nudity is something that is frowned upon in China, just like transparent shower curtains and looking down when you change your clothes. If the issue here is simply with the term “naked”, then it would be proper at this juncture to heed the words of illustrious poet Ray Stevens who had this to say about public (official) nudity:

He ain’t crude, look at that, look at that
He ain’t lewd, look at that, look at that
He’s just in the mood to run in the nude

As Yang grapples with the lack of faith demonstrated by the public towards a group of officials they had no influence in selecting, then maybe the image problem can be solved by a 70s country song that righteously starts on the IV chord.

Anyways, at this point for these naked officialsit seems like initiating a “cover up” is besides the point.

Woman, naked on street, threatens to commit suicide unless given money she’s owed

A middle-aged woman stood on a street in Shenzhen’s Chegongmiao area stripping naked before pulling out a knife and threatening to kill herself on March 21. As she held the knife to her own throat, she threatened to kill herself unless repaid money she claimed to have been cheated out of, Guangdong Morning reports.

Chegongmiao is one of the city’s busiest areas. But this didn’t stop the Liaoning woman from stripping naked and shouting for the man in office number 705 of the neighbouring building to come down. She shouted: “He cheated me for 3 years.”

According to the Security Guard of the building, Shentang Tower, this is the third time she has come demanding to see a Mr. Zhang, whom she accuses of cheating her.

Zhang works for Shenzhen Century Tonghua Electronics, but no representative of the company has yet spoken to media.

Proof that sending lewd images online knows no boundaries

Anyone who pays any attention to the news will know that New York congressmen Anthony Weiner resigned last month after sending lewd photos of his… uh… junk to women over Twitter. But it now seems that tweeting naked pictures of oneself is far more popular than originally thought.

Next up is a sub-district office director from Baiyun District in Guangzhou, Liu Ning. He sent photos of himself sans clothing to his mistress on China microblogging service Sina Weibo, apparently unaware that, well, it’s public.

He’s been busted just as badly as Congressman Weiner, with images of himself circulating on Sina Weibo and in the Guangzhou Daily newspaper.

(On another note, one wonders why a man with his particular physique would find it compelling to share naked photos of himself?)

Shanghaiist notes that, coincidentally, a recent conference in Guangzhou for Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference members outlined how to use Weibo for political discourse:

Caixin Online reports that during the session (which had officials signing up for accounts on the feckless People’s Daily weibo service), attendees ‘laughed lightly’ when Liu was referred to. We’re sure some shifting in seats and looking to the side was also involved on top of that.
