Shenzhen man awarded for donating blood 145 times
Posted: 07/25/2012 1:00 pmA blue collar worker and red cross volunteer has donated blood 153 times without any apparent negative affects on his health, according to The Nanfang Daily. Lai Jiahe, 53, was awarded two of Shenzhen’s highest honours last year for his altruism.
He has also inspired neighbours and family members to do the same. His daughter went to donate blood on her 18th birthday, which is the legal age for blood donation in China. His neighbours and even the security guards at his building have been known to go straight from work to donate blood.
Lai has also pioneered the promotion of blood donation. He designed the city’s first leaflet to advertise blood donation and is heavily involved in promoting it online.
Lai also has an organ donor card. He claims this is due to his parents influence. In November 2006 his father died after battling a long-term illness. According to the father’s wishes, his corneas were donated to a Hong Kong man and a Hainan woman, both of whom saw their eyesight quickly recover.
Lai is a respected member of his community, known for bringing soup to the security guards and volunteering to clean leaflets from the entrance of his building.
He has also helped Chengguan bust illegal business activities.
Blood donation is widely encouraged in the city. Stations at which you can donate blood include one on the first floor of People’s Hospital on Shennan East Road in Luohu District, and one on Huaqiang Bei Road by the bus stop Jingji Dasha.
