New baby hatch in Guangzhou sees 33 kids abandoned over holiday

We first told you about Shenzhen’s baby hatch late last year, and now Guangzhou has followed suit with one of its own.

A baby hatch is a safe place to drop unwanted babies where they will be picked up, cared for, and hopefully placed with a loving family. The hatch in Guangzhou opened on January 28 and saw 33 abandoned babies over the Spring Festival period to February 7, according to Jianghua Times.

The baby hatch, located in front of the Guangzhou Social Welfare Institute, is about 50 meters away from the Welfare Institute’s security room. So far the abandoned babies range from two days to five years old, with many suffering from diseases or other abnormalities like a cleft lip and palate, cerebral palsy, congenital heart disease and down’s syndrome. Of the 33 dropped off, there were 22 boys and 11 girls. Two have been taken to hospital for medical care, two over-aged kids have been sent to relief stations and the rest have been checked by doctors and appear to be stable.

Staff members from the Guangzhou Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau said as Guangzhou provides good medical care, the Guangzhou Welfare Institute tends to deal with the highest number of abandoned babies than any other institute in China. So far the Institute has received 2,100 babies but only has about 1,000 beds.

Guagnzhou, with its high population of migrants, is much like Shenzhen, which faces a similar problem. We reported in November:

Yang Jianchan, a government official in Shenzhen, said the facility is needed in the city. “Shenzhen has many migrant workers, and many Guangdong people prefer to have a son rather than a daughter. This program could encourage parents to abandon baby girls in a much more safe way.”

Tang doesn’t think building a “Baby Safety Island” will wipe out such inhuman behaviour, but it could improve the survival rate of abandoned babies. He also stressed the facility will have a 24-hour watch system.

The first baby hatches were launched in Germany, with more slated to open in China as well.
