The Chinese continue to have a ferocious appetite for movies. While North American box office revenues dipped in 2014, China’s soared by 36 percent, raking in a whopping RMB 29.9 billion.

Although foreign film releases are limited in China – only 80 of them were released last year, compared with 308 Chinese films – a disproportionate amount of revenue comes from American blockbusters. Take last year’s top grossing film for example: Transformers: Age of Extinction, now the highest grossing film of all time in China.

Following a banner year, expectations are high for China’s box office in 2015. And as for those Hollywood blockbusters, CCTV has reported on what you can expect to see in Chinese cinemas this year:

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens
  • Mission: Impossible 5
  • Terminator Genisys
  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
  • Jurassic World
  • The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

In addition to the list of big name sequels, the line-up also contains some oddities that have somehow made it past Chinese censors.

hollywood movies 2015 china predestinationPredestination is a low-budget sci-fi thriller starring Ethan Hawke in story about time travel written by Robert Heinlein. While the content of the movie does not feature any gratuitous or graphic scenes, it does feature the story of a family far removed from traditional conservative ideals, and may challenge Chinese audiences.

movies 2015 ted 2Ted 2 is the sequel to the Seth MacFarlane film about a crude teddy bear come to life. The original film contained several scenes that pushed a lot of buttons. It included a scene featuring a Chinese character who speaks with a heavy accent and has a poster of Chairman Mao on his wall.

All the same, Chinese domestic films will have their work cut out for them in 2015. Look for the sequel to China’s top grossing domestic film, Lost in Thailand (now set in Hong Kong), the next in the Tiny Times series, and the massively-hyped Miss Granny, a film about an old woman who gets to literally relive her youth.

Cinema is just the tip of the Iceberg: the same situation is happening or will happen soon to loads of foreign brands and products. China is not a free market.

I’m pumped to see Predestination this weekend. I’m sure my gf will eave the theater in a completely confused state, but people have been praising this movie left and right in the States, so personally I’m gonna love it.

Nice of you to talk about your girlfriend like that?

Watched it last week: nice ideas and well designed, but running on empty in the end. Entertaining, but uneven. Bar scene is too long.
