Hilarious Stereotypes of Foreign Countries Held by Chinese People

Posted: 01/30/2015 9:21 am

usa paradeStereotyping might not be politically correct, but it happens nonetheless. If you ask anyone about China, you’re likely to get a variety of answers about what Chinese people tend to be like.

But what do Chinese people think about your country? Yes, the stereotyping goes both ways. A travel agency in China has compiled a list of national stereotypes to try and help Chinese travelers get beyond them.

Here’s what the article, reasons why foreigners don’t match your initial impression of them, all here for you to discuss, says:

Hey everybody; have you ever brought up a country only to have a strict association with it? For example, talking about South Korea will remind you of plastic surgery, talking about Thailand is to talk about ladyboys, and talking about Japan is to bring up perverts…

The following lists foreigners by their stereotypes; what’s your response?

Canadians: everything they say is boring, and life is depressing there

Maybe you’ve thought that since Canada is so cold and icy that there’s nothing to do there. In fact, in Canada you can go snowboarding, kayaking, and do other extreme sports. What’s more, absurdist comedy star Jim Carrey and Friends actor Matthew Perry are both Canadians, and are they boring? They’re hilarious! Therefore, don’t say that Canadians are boring!

Americans: Liberated thinkers, are tolerant of everything

Actually, European countries are more liberal minded than the USA, as seen in the more acceptable attitude towards nude beaches. Additionally, there are 16 states in the US that have not yet legalized gay marriage. That’s why it’s not that fitting to say that Americans are not that liberal.

sleepingSpaniards: Lazy, and love to sleep

Every day, Spaniards enjoy a three hour lunch and an afternoon nap. This is why other countries believe Spaniards are lazy and don’t want to work. However, Spain has seen a 2.8 percent annual average growth in its GDP, beating Germany by one percent.

Italians: Passionate, undisciplined, inefficient

The success of the textile and chemical manufacturing industry of Italy, its fine cuisine of pizza and pasta, the culture and historical architecture from the Renaissance era –these things all prove that Italians are not the least bit undisciplined and inefficient.

English: Soccer hooligans, and the fact that English men love soccer more than they love women!

In fact, more fights happen over soccer in Sweden than they do in England.

French: Arrogant

It’s been said that the French don’t like to smile at strangers and have an air of superiority, but this is just the culture of France. To them, they don’t like to display any hypocritical expressions. The French consider smiling to have nothing to do with etiquette, just as arrogance doesn’t.

Irish: Drunk every day

Any time the subjects of drunks or bars are brought up, many people think of the Irish. However, in an 2004 international study about the use of alcohol, Ireland ranked behind Luxembourg and Hungary.

Filipinos: Barbaric, backwards islanders

In 2003, the average Filipino sent 2,300 text messages a day, making it the most prevalent users of text messages in the world. At the same time, the Philippines is the blogging capital of Asia, therefore the Philippines is not backwards by any stretch of the imagination.

Indians: Narrow thinking, are all poor bastards

Although many Indians still live in poverty, this situation has improved in recent years. India has become a world leader in software, and is one of the fastest rising economies in the world. Have you seen the 2009 comedy 3 Idiots? The number of films produced by the Indian film industry is the highest in the world, as is its box office! Therefore, how can one rationally say that Indians have a narrow scope of thinking, and are all poor bastards?

Cultural stereotypes are something that slowly but imperceptibly affect our thinking. It’s the same with foreigners that all think Chinese can perform kung-fu like Bruce Lee, something that makes Chinese speechless. Therefore, you shouldn’t have any stereotypes towards foreigners or else they’ll think us and our stereotypes to be silly and naive…

As a Caucasian Chinese, I can confirm that I have been a victim of these stereotypes multiple times. It hurts.

TEXAS has nude beaches. ‘Nude beaches’ does not mean liberal. Also, there are plenty of places in Europe that aren anti-gay. Paris is not France. Get a clue, Chuck!

Thank you. This guy is the worst! Who’s ass does Charles pull his articles out of?

      • Yu_Suk_Kok

Several longtime posters have made legitimate complaints about Charles Liu (the Resident WUMAO), but thenanfang.com chooses to ignore these complaints. Thenanfang is proving itself to be just another worthless propaganda site (similar to echinacities).

Time to start contacting their advertisers.

I do agree that, on the whole, many more European countries are more liberal than the US. A more accurate definition would be Western/Northern Europe, however, since Eastern Europe is much more conservative generally. It’s all generalization though, of course. I know plenty of quite conservative British people (they like to call themselves traditionalists, lol) but American conservatism goes to whole new levels, from what I’ve seen. I definitely agree that the author has presented his arguments very very poorly.

      • pppq

I guess I would simply discard the terms ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ when comparing politics between different cultures and countries. What we really have in the USA is a single corporatist party with a slightly liberal wing and an increasingly far-right wing. However, if voter apathy is any indication, not to mention the sudden flourishing of new approaches (e.g. American-style capitalist libertarianism, a newly popular far left, etc.), then the policies of the Republicrats are hardly any litmus test.

It’s true that some European countries have a much-better organized left. However, those same countries have a much larger, much more successful xenophobic right, and they can be pretty homophobic. (Anyone remember France’s huge protests against gay marriage?)

But the point we agree on–that Chucky has made a really poor argument (i.e. nudist beaches. At least we know his political priorities in the New World Order!), and none of this has anything to do with China!

  • Myna

I must say that I am disappointed to find these stereotypes not being even remotely hilarious. They’re quite mundane to be honest, and (with the exception of the American stereotype) are not held exclusively by Chinese people.

    • pppq

You don’t get out mucy, do you?

      • Myna

Thank you for your interest in my personal life! No, I don’t get out much, living in Beijing for the past eight years I try to stay indoors as much as possible.

        • pppq

Sarcasm and despair all in one post! You might need one of those public service messages for closeted gay teenagers: “It does get better!” It begins with accepting a job outside of the north…

          • Myna

Sure, of course. But I was also wondering if you could address why you, unlike me, found these Chinese stereotypes to be hilarious – I found them to be quite commonplace, actually.

          • pppq

I think you already said that in your original post. And if you read my post above, I didn’t find them hilarious. I find the whole article to be poorly thought out.

However, that said, I disagree that they are commonplace. Perhaps you’re just a bigot.

          • Myna

            Okay, then we’re in agreement.

I believe these stereotypes are held to a certain extent by many people around the world, but I certainly don’t agree with any of them.

          • pppq

And we’re back to step 1: You need to get out more. These are hardly common around the world. Who in the West think that Filipinos are barbarians? Or that Indians are narrow-minded? Who in Asia think Italians are inefficient and undisciplined? Some of the finest scholarship I have ever seen–and scholarship requires the highest efficiency and discipline–comes out of Italian universities! (If only China could make the same boast.)

OK, true, many people enjoy pegging the Irish with the stereotype of being drunks. But with Finns, Swedes, Welshman–not to mention Koreans and northern Chinese–competing for elbow space at the bar, you’d easily forget the Irish!

These ‘stereotypes’ are neither hilarious nor mundane. They’re just stupid.

          • Myna

I see, you certainly make a good point, and I agree with you – but if you had just explained this from the beginning, I wouldn’t have been so confused by your initial remark!

          • pppq

Must I do all of the heavy lifting? ;-) I guess I assumed you were following the whole list of comments and not just leaving your two bits. Good luck with the air in Beijing!

  • Spoiler Alert

How are these stereotypes particularly Chinese? They’re pretty much universal. As for Spain, it’s not so impressive or meaningful to have a higher percentage growth rate than Europe’s largest economy when you’re 1/4 the size but have 1/2 the workforce.

    • Tommy Longrigg

I would say that what he fails to point out is the real prevalence of these stereotypes. I think that many of these would be held by people in the UK too, but the difference is that the average UK person would know they were stereotypes and identify as such. These views are often held as gospel truth by people here. It’s breathtaking at times.

  • Aaron Wytze

God, they’re so right about Canadians…

  • jacob

Chinese: no heart , beguiled of money

  • Cynic-Al

Chinese distinguish between countries? I thought everyone was from the state of Waiguo!

    • Tommy Longrigg

I was waiting to see something like this. You are absolutely right! Everything is either China or “foreign” – two ways of everything. If I had 10 RMB for every time I heard someone say “you foreigners like…but we Chinese like…”

      • pppq

Well, technically most black people are not from ‘Waiguo’, regardless if they’re from America, France, or Nigeria. They’re all otherworldly spirits with a dark disposition. (I mean, America’s the racist country. Chinese aren’t racist at all, right? Right?)

  • Tommy Longrigg

I think what he has here is a list of right ideas, backed up by quasi-facts and nothingy arguments that read like stereotypes themselves. It’s right to remind people that stereotypes are wrong, but backing up with equally dubious evidence is totally unhelpful. There are exceptions here though, the football hooligan one for instance (but would have been better with numbers). It can’t help the strength of an article about generalization and stereotype when the author uses equal amounts of both.

I’ve lived in China 10 years, and I have to say that the stereotype thinking of foreigners is VERY real, and extremely prevalent. It’s quite funny when you think how frustrated, offended and incensed many Chinese get at foreign stereotypes of China. A typical dialogue could go…”oh, you’re from the UK? Yeah I love UK, everybody there is gentleman! But why do you ALL think that Chinese do kung fu? It’s so weird, why would you think that? Anyway, you want to have builders tea and watch football now?”

The way I see it, the problem lies in education in china, which does absolutely nothing to bash stereotypes. Far from it, they are frequently talked about by educators as “fact” that people should be remembering. When the current young generation of china, with its increased travel experience, better access to international media and changing tastes in all things international comes of age and takes the reins, things will be better.
