Guangzhou Has Deported 768 Foreigners So Far This Year

Life is getting tougher for foreigners in China, whether it’s something as simple as more restricted access to western TV shows online or tougher visa regulations.

We have been reporting for a while now that Guangzhou has been cracking down on foreigners in the city, specifically visitors from Africa. One report said half of the 200,000 African expats in Guangzhou are there illegally.

No matter where you’re from, make sure you have a valid visa and working permit, because Guangzhou isn’t messing around when it comes to deportations.

So far this year, the city announced it has either detained or deported 768 foreigners for things like expired passports, overstaying visas, illegal entry, and other criminal acts. The city remains one of the most popular destinations for visitors from other countries, with more than three million foreigners arriving or leaving the city this year.

The report says Guangzhou is currently home to 86,000 foreigners.

    Wait, what? Check your math, how can there be 200,000 African expats, and 86,000 foreigners? Are we segregating blacks from other foreigners?

      The 86,000 figure is the official number released by the Guangzhou government, as in those who have properly registered with the PSB and are living and working legally in the city. The 200,000 Africans figure is from a research report done by the Guangzhou Developmental Academy of Guangzhou University, and includes all African residents, both legal and illegal.       I wish the Chinese government would report how many Chinese nationals are currently working and living on the continent legally and illegally. Just Angola alone has more than 300,000 Chinese and not all of them are legal. Perhaps it is time African states started flexing their muscles as well.

    “Life is getting tougher for foreigners in China” No, only for the illegals, the drunken fools and other criminals, as it would in any other country. I just renewed my RP without any difficulty despite the new rules/law. However life is going to get tougher for most schools if they can’t get illegal FT on L or F visa anymore (remember, they entire business plan is having foreigners to teach English or other languages). Good move China.
