Guangdong gang accused of injecting dirty pond water into meat

Posted: 01/7/2014 7:00 am

Seven people in Guangdong are in police custody over claims they injected dirty pond water into lamb to increase its weight and raise its price, Reuters reports.

The suspects slaughtered up to 100 sheep a day at an illegal warehouse on the outskirts of Guangzhou and pumped germ-infested water into the meat before it was sold at markets, food stalls and restaurants in Guangzhou, Foshan, and other major cities, CCTV said in a report.

This is the latest in a long line of food safety scandals that have also included ones relating to gutter oil and baby milk powder.

Last week also saw an outcry over fox-tainted donkey meat.

It’s not just Chinese suppliers that have come under fire. Yum! brands, McDonald’s and Carrefour have all been at the centre of food safety scandals in China in recent years.

You can see some images of the Guangdong slaughterhouse here but it might put you off your breakfast.
