Shenzhen fails on so many levels as a wannabe international city, but weather is decent and summers are long at least. Pollution and climate are huge turn-off for me. Comment on China Losing Patience with Foreigners, Starting to Deport Them for Petty Crimes by Tommy Longrigg http://www.thenanfang.com/blog/china-losing-patience-with-foreigners-starting-to-deport-them-for-petty-crimes/#comment-44663 Tommy Longrigg Mon, 02 Feb 2015 03:02:00 +0000 http://www.thenanfang.com/blog/?p=35530#comment-44663 People like those mentioned in the article should be deported. They clearly have no regard for the law, or even an ounce of decency. Having seen one comment on here already that is clearly very sweeping and dismissive of all foreigners (with a username to match), I merely express concern over where such an idea could go, with a worst-case scenario being foreigners getting deported just because someone in authority doesn't like the look of them or is displeased with their opinion on something. That's an uglier route. People like those mentioned in the article should be deported. They clearly have no regard for the law, or even an ounce of decency. The roads in Beijing are extremely comprehensive and laid out pretty well. Why then does traffic congestion persist. Many point simply to the number of cars. The way I see it, it's all about the god-damned lane changing. Why do you change into the right lane when you are going to be turning left in less than 100m? Because you saw that lane moving a tiny bit faster? The driving to satisfy the next 20m advancement rather than where you're ultimately heading... Another thing is the fact that when people have crashes/fender benders (thankfully they are mostly low-speed because of heavy traffic), they don't move their cars because there are no clear rules on who's at fault, and so we must wait for the police. UGH! If you hit the guy in front, you're at fault, period. Now move your cars aside, swap information and get moving! You'd need them every 100m to ensure bad driving habits weren't too prevalent. The driving instruction and examination needs to be more rigorous, and steeper fines imposed on people for driving offenses, in my opinion. I'm with you on the 3 habits you mention there - they infuriate me on a daily basis. Traffic cops can help with number 2 and perhaps 3 (though i never see people listening to those crossing guards, lol), but habitually bad driving is EVERYWHERE. Lane changing is the biggest cause of traffic jams all over the city all through the day. I think the long commutes are also hampered by the city being poorly planned out. It's too focused on every type of activity being too heavily focused in one part of the city. They want all the business done around CBD, but everyone is supposed to be living in these designated residential areas...have you been on line 5 during rush hour? It's impossible because everyone piles in at one stop and stays on until the last stop, so you can't get on or off anywhere in between! For me, the biggest crippling factor is pollution, if it could reduce its polluted days even by, say, 25%, it would make a HUGE difference on the livability of the city. The fact is, Beijing is vibrant, fun and fascinating. There's just EVERYTHING here, and whatever you feel like doing, it's basically possible to find it. many. for all its failings, it’s still a city where you can enjoy an incredibly high standard of living on modest wages. Comment on Tipping, Morning Showers, and Other Things Chinese People Can’t Understand About Americans by Tommy Longrigg http://www.thenanfang.com/blog/tipping-morning-showers-and-other-things-chinese-people-cant-understand-about-americans/#comment-44657 Tommy Longrigg Mon, 02 Feb 2015 02:05:00 +0000 http://www.thenanfang.com/blog/?p=35619#comment-44657 There are two here that I agree with. One is the pants below the underwear thing. My brother does that a bit, used to do it more, I NEVER NEVER understood why...it just looks ridiculous to me. They don't even have nice underwear to show off! The second one is the tipping. I'm fully aware that servers and people in related jobs get TERRIBLE pay, and so come to rely on tips. But what I can't understand is the way that the same servers do their best to make customers feel bad for not tipping "enough" (or at all), even when the service is terrible. They should be taking up their pay issues with their bosses, not with customers! If I don't feel it was worth a tip, then I shouldn't have to pay one! Europe has a good balance on tipping, and the heart of the matter is that when restaurant workers don't get tips, they reflect on whether or not it's because the diner's experience was good enough or not. The vast majority of people will tip when they have a good time. I certainly do. I gave a bartender in London a 4.80 tip on a 15.20 round of drinks because he was just superb to us and everyone else all evening. He wasn't even my type! Tipping is on the increase in China, anyway. More people now are getting a really great dining experience, and also get used to the idea from traveling to foreign countries. It has been quite common practice in nightclubs to tip waiters since as early as 2006-7, and now you see it a lot more in fancy restaurants. Nowhere near like America, though, but it's a first step. I can only imagine sleeping in bed or on the sofa with shoes if I was wasted and kind of passed out there, hahahaha. Most of this stuff is bollocks. The diet soda one was interesting, but I notice a lot of diet soda drinkers drink it just because they get used to the taste of it and prefer it. I'm like that with diet coke. I don't drink any other diet drinks, but that one I love for some reason Yeah I literally don’t know of a single American who goes to bed with shoes on…unless it was a drunk person the writer saw do once?
