Baby found abandoned in squat toilet in Dongguan, 15 year-old mother arrested
Posted: 09/6/2012 3:13 pmA newborn baby was found in the toilet of a shoe factory in Dongguan yesterday. The baby is now in a good condition in hospital and the mother has been arrested, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.
Around 7:00 am, a female worker was in the toilet of Liaobu Kaitai Shoe Factory when she heard a baby crying in the next cubicle. The woman first pulled the infant out of the hole and then called emergency services.
An ambulance came from Tongji Guanghua Hospital and took the boy for a series of medical checks. He is in good health with normal reflexes and no breathing difficulties. Liu Dong, head of the emergency department of the hospital, commented on how lucky the baby is to be alive, saying he was too large to fully flush down.
Police immediately began an investigation to locate the child’s mother. Officers from Liaobu Hengkeng Police Station searched the factory’s dormitories, asking whether any of the workers had been pregnant recently.
They were told that Chen Yuehua, a 15 year-old worker, had appeared pregnant and had spent a long time in the toilet that morning. When police located Chen, who comes from Guangxi Province, her skirt was covered in blood but she denied the allegations, claiming she had recently put on weight because she had eaten too much.
During the interrogation, Chen fainted and police took her to Tongji Guanghua Hospital. While they were there, they did tests that confirmed Chen was the biological mother.
Chen finally confessed but still refuses to disclose the identity of the baby’s father. She has expressed no remorse.
Liu Dong said that in his seven years in his current role, he has encountered at least six babies who were saved after being found in squat toilets, but has never met a mother as unapologetic as Chen. The investigation is ongoing.
The baby will be put up for adoption.
