Autistic boy expelled from a Shenzhen school welcomed back

Posted: 11/1/2012 8:00 am

After a series of harrowing tales that have come out of Chinese schools in recent weeks, we have a story to suggest that some schools are becoming more enlightened and inclusive.

The autistic boy who we told you about last month has been allowed to return to class, Shenzhen Daily reports.  He was originally expelled after the parents of 19 classmates said the boy was a negative influence on their children’s learning.

The boy, Long Long, returned to classes at Baocheng Primary School in Baoan District Oct. 29 after charities such as One Foundation persuaded the school to take him back.

Autism experts at Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University made a confluent education plan for Long Long that merged several techniques and ideas to help him integrate into regular classes gradually.

A volunteer will accompany Long Long in class to help him reintegrate.

Long Long’s mother, a single mother, told reporters that her son was a gifted and well-meaning child and he would thrive if given proper guidance.
